Jr. Bulldogs fall to Moncton

Despite an earlier 6-3 win over the Moncton Vitos in round-robin play, the AA Munro Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs could not come up with a second win over the Vitos and as a result their 2021-2022 Hockey Season is now over following a 5-1 loss to the Vitos in a Don Johnson Memorial Cup semi-final playoff game Saturday night in Cocagne, New Brunswick.  The Vitos will now be looking for their 3rd Don Johnson Memorial Cup since 2010 when they face-off against the Kent Coyotes in an All New Brunswick Atlantic Championship Game Sunday afternoon.

 
 
Saturday evening the Bulldogs fell behind 2-0 after the first period and 4-0 after forty minutes before Ben MacLellan scored the Jr. Bulldogs only goal of the game in the third period.  The Vitos later added an empty net goal to make the final 5-1.  Antigonish did outshoot the Vitos 32-29 including 12-5 in the third but they could only come up with the one goal through 60 minutes.  The Kent Coyotes squeaked by the Mt. Pearl Jr. Blades 2-1 in the first semi-final Saturday afternoon.  The winner of the Moncton-Kent game Sunday will gove New Brunswick their fourth Don Johnson Memorial Cup in the past eleven years.  Nova Scotia has won it three times in that same 11-year span with the Cumberland County Blues winning in 2010, the Valley Maple Leafs in 2016 and the Membertou Jr. Miners in 2018.
 
The 2023 Don Johnson Memorial Cup will be played at the Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool.

Antigonish advances to semi-finals versus Moncton

It was an unfortunate setback for the AA Munro Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs at 2022 Don Johnson Memorial Cup in New Brunswick Friday as they suffered back to back to back losses to finish 2-2-0-0 for 6 points in the four game round-robin but the 6 points enabled them to make it to the playoff round where they will square off against the 3-1-0 Moncton Vitos Saturday night at 7:00 in the second of two semi-final games.  With a win the Jr. Bulldogs advance to the Atlantic Championship Final Sunday afternoon.  

 
The Jr. Bulldogs suffered their first setback in a 12:00 noon start Friday as they took a 1-0 lead over the Kent Coyotes after twenty minutes but it was all the scoring Antigonish could do as the Coyotes came back to take a 2-1 lead after forty minutes and add two more in the third to win 4-1.  Kent outshot Antigonish 49-26 including 20-6 in the first period and 20-8 in the second period before Antigonish slowed them down somewhat in the third and outshot the host team 12-9.
 
In Friday’s 2nd game of the day, the Sherwood-Parkdale Metros from Prince Edward Island defeated the Bulldogs 4-1.  The Metros wee leading 1-0 after the first period before they struck early in the second to go up 2-0.  Jake MacDonald then tallied for the Bulldogs with 6:)6 having been played in the middle period before the Metros scored on the power-play with 47 seconds left in the third period to win it 4-1.  Antigonish outshot the Prince Edward Island Provincial Champions 41-27 but could not buy a goal during key stretches of the game.
 
The Jr. Bulldogs garnered their first win of the tournament Wednesday when they doubled up the Moncton Vitos 6-3 but it turned out to be the Vitos only loss of the round-robin.  The other semi-final Saturday afternoon pits the Mount Pearl Jr. Blades against Kent.  PEI missed the playoffs despite having a better record than Mt. Pearl but the Don Johnson Website provides absolutely no explanation as to what error resulted in Mt. Pearl advancing and PEI missing out.  The winners of the two Saturday semi-finals clash for the Don Johnson Memorial Cup Sunday afternoon.

Bulldogs start 2-0-0 at DO JO Cup

Two huge games Friday for the AA Munro Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs at the 2022 Don Johnson Memorial Cup in Cocagne, New Brunswick.  At 12:00 noon Friday, the Bulldogs square off against the Sherwood-Parkdale Metros, PEI Provincial Champions and at 7:30 tonight play the host Kent Coyotes.

 
Thursday afternoon, the Jr. Bulldogs put an exceptionally solid performance blanking Newfoundland Provincial Champions the Mount Pearl Blades by a count of 4-0.  Jake MacDonald put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 with his goal with only 47 seconds left in the opening period.  In the second Sam Mattie scored his 3rd and 4th goals of the tournament, the first with 3:05 to play in the second and the second with 1:00 to play in the middle period.  Craig Landry then put the Jr. Bulldogs up 4-0 with his goal with only 12 seconds to play in the second.  There was no scoring in the third period with the win putting the Bulldogs in first place with 6 points as each win in regulation is worth 3 points.   Mt. Pearl  outshot Antigonish 33-28 including 18-10 and 11-8 in the first and second periods.  PEI and Nfld remain tied for 2nd place with 3 points but they had late games being played Thursday.  This page will be updated Friday morning.  Ryan MacLellan has collected five assists for the Bulldogs in their two games to date.
 
In the Bulldogs opening game of the tournament Wednesday evening, they doubled up NB Champions the Moncton Vitos 6-3.  The Bulldogs went in front 3-0 on goals from Jordan Etheridge, William Fitzsimmons and Ethan Twolan but with 8:43 gone in the third period, the Vitos had tied the game at 3-3 before the Jr. Bulldogs put it fourth gear scoring 3 times in the games final 3:17, two of them coming off the stick of Sam Mattie and the other an empty netter by Darren Waterman.  The teams were tied in shots on goal at 32-32.
