Blazers squeak by Valley, Jr. Miners outscore Colts

The Valley Maple Leafs played a disciplined game against the Sackville Blazers Friday night and after all their shortcomings this season, the Leafs actually deserved more but ended up losing 4-3 to the first place Blazers who recorded their 9th win in 13 games to date this season.  With only 2:05 being played in the opening period, Eric Wozniewicz gave the Leafs a 1-0 lead.  It stayed that way for the next 4:15 when the Blazers Alex Charest let a wrist go from the point which beat Aidan Durnford high to the left side as it went by his mask with Durnford partially on his pads in the crease.  Only 55 seconds later Degen Noble let a shot go from the face-off circle to score his 10th of the season for Sackville.  Noble with his 11th made it 3-1 Blazers on sloppy, sloppy defense by the Leafs as Noble picked the puck up to the left of Durnford after Durnford skated too far out of his net and was just making it back to the net when Noble dumped it into an almost empty net.  Play went back and forth in the opening period as the Valley was up in shots 5-4 before Sackville took command for awhile and outshot the Leafs 11-1 before the Leafs gained a new breath of life and outshot the Blazers 9-2.  Sackville had a 17-15 advantage overall in the opening frame.

 
In the second period Liam Ferguson for the Leafs scored the period’s only goal on a slap shot from the point which seemed to deflect off a stick as it went into the Blazers net but Ferguson was still given credit for the goal.  The Blazers Daniel Surrette missed on clear cut breakaway and then Mitchell Comeau picked up a loose puck for the Blazers and went in alone only to shoot it 15 feet over the Leafs net.  Brady MacLean missed a glorious scoring chance for the Leafs with the Sackville goalie down but MacLean with his stick on the puck simply could not lift it over and into the Blazers net.  The Leafs had another great chance going in 3 on 1 but Ryan MacDonald with two chances couldn’t capitalize either time.
 
In the third period, Daniel Surrette netted the game winner for the Blazers with 11:50 left as he shot from the point and it deflected at the last split second to Durnford’s left-side.  A mere 44 seconds later, the Blazers were sloppy with the puck enabling Brady MacLean to get a shot alone in front of the Blazers net to bring the Leafs back to within a goal.  However it was as close as they could get with the Blazers outshooting the Leafs 15-8 in the third period and 42-40 overall in the game.  Sackville goes right back into action at home Saturday afternoon against Membertou while the Leafs are off until their Cape Breton road trip next weekend when they will play Port Hawkesbury Friday, Membertou Saturday night and Eskasoni Sunday afternoon.

The Jr. Miners won their 7th of the season in 10 games with an easy 7-3 win over the now 3-5-0 Colts.  The Jr. Miners jumped in front 5-1 and led 5-2 after forty minutes.  Kody Groves and Coby McCarron scored first period goals for Membertou while Stephen Warwick tallied for the Colts.  The Jr. Miners went up 5-1 in the second with three consecutive goals by Josh MacKay who also added 2 assists, Nathaniel Fuller with his first of two to  go along with an assist and Blake Cox who also added an assist.  Tyler Puma scored the Colts second goal.  Josh Moore brought the colts to within a pair with 6:18 having been played in the third but Fuller with his second of the game and AJ Ley scored the Colts 6th and 7th goals.  Membertou outshot the Colts 33-30.  The Jr. Miners finish their HRM weekend road trip in Sackville Saturday evening.

Blazers lead Fox by 3 points but a lot might change between now and Christmas break

The Liverpool Privateers entered the confines of the Sackville arena Mon Nov 15 hoping to tie the Blazers for first place in the Fred Fox Division.  This did not happen but they also did not fall 4 points behind the Blazers either as the Privateerss settled for a hard fought 4-3 shoot-out loss to the Blazers, leaving them three points out of first place with a 6-4-2 record for 14 points compared to the Blazers 8-3-1 mark for 17 points.  The teams were tied 1-1 after twenty minutes after Jude Greenwood put the visitors up 1-0 2:31 into the contest.  Degen Noble with just slightly more than two minutes to play in the first tied the game at 1-1 for the Blazers.  The second period saw only one goal and that went to the Blazers Sencer Langille-Crowe mid-way through the second.  The Blazers Noble on the power-play made it 3-1 Sackville before the third period was four minutes old but the Privateers stayed determined as Dylan Patterson on the power-play and Kayden Nickerson scored 1:47 apart in the latter stages of the third to send the game into sudden-death overtime.  The teams did no scoring in the five-minute overtime forcing the game into a shoot-out where three players from each team all took attempts and when it was over and done, 5 of the shooters were denied with Trey Faulkner, Sackville’s second shooter scoring to give his the team the victory.  Degan Noble an Brian Grandy failed in their attempts for the Blazers while Alec Howie, Daniel Kline and Kayden Nickerson all missed for the Privateers who outshot the Blazers 42-35.
 
As to who will be in first place come the Christmas Break in the Fred Fox Division is anyone’s guess at this point as the Blazers, Privateers and East Hants all have very busy schedules over the next 2 weeks.  The Privateers are idle this weekend but will play Cumberland and Sackville in back to back home games Sat Nov 26 and Sun Nov 27.  Sackville has three games in four days this weekend with an away game in the Valley tonight at 7:30, a home game Sat Nov 20 at 5:30 against Membertou and then a home and home Monday and next Friday Nov 26 with the Cole Harbour Capstone Colts.  As for the 6-5-0 East Hants Penguins, they have five upcoming games, all against Sid Rowe Division opponents.  They entertain Port Hawkesbury tonight Fri Nov 19, Antigonish next Friday and Cumberland County Fri Dec 3 before playing a home and home series with the Pictou County Scotians Sun Dec 5 and Friday Dec 10.

Jr. Bulldogs 11-0-0 after sweeping Eskasoni

The Antigonish AA Munro Jr. Bulldogs completed their weekend home and home with the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles Sunday in Eskasoni with their 11th consecutive win to begin the 2021-2022 NSJHL season.  Like so many other games, the Jr. Bulldogs struck first with Connor Doherty and Jake MacDonald putting the university town up 2-0.  Doherty finished the day with his goal while adding a pair of assists in the Bulldogs 5-3 win.  after giving themselves a 2-0 advantage, they allowed the Eagles to squeeze back into the game for a short time as Antle Denny and Kinnon Williams both scored to knot the game at 2-2.  It stayed that way until the final two minutes of the second period when Craig Landry put Antigonish back on top 3-2.  The Jr. Bulldogs took that lead to the dressing room after forty minutes and then came out in the third period and added two more from Sam Grant who scored the game winner which was followed by the Jr. Bulldogs final goal of the afternoon from Ryan MacLellan.  Antle Denny with his second of the afternoon closed out the scoring with the Jr. Eagles third goal with 14 seconds left in regulation.  The Jr. Bulldogs now return home for a game Friday Nov 19 when they host the Cumberland County Blues before hitting the road for two more in Pictou Sunday, Nov 21 and East HantsFriday, Nov 26.

Stunning upset by Elks, Scotians now 4-4-0 on season

The Brookfield Elks stunned everyone Saturday afternoon, Nov 13 at the Don Henderson Memorial Rink in Brookfield by defeating the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates 6-5 on a power-play goal from Brennan MacDonald with only 40 seconds remaining in regulation as Luke Hadley was serving a hooking penalty for the Pirates which had been called 16 seconds earlier and with 56 seconds left in regulation.  Even crazier is the fact, the Strait Pirates coming into the game stood at 6-1-0 compared to the Elks 0-7-1 record.  The Strait Pirates led throughout much of the game taking leads of 2-0 and 4-2 before stretching their lead to 3 goals at 5-2 in the third period before the roof collapsed on the Canadian Tire Strait Pirates.  Noah Latimer was the artillery man for the Elks firing 3 goals and adding an assist to bring the Elks back from 5-2 down to just a single goal behind at 5-4 before Owen Gravel tied it for the Elks 44 seconds after Latimer’s 3rd goal and the Elks 4th of the afternoon, Then it was MacDonald’s turn for the game winner with 40 seconds showing to give Brookfield their first win of the 21-22 NSJHL Season.  The Strait Pirates fell to 6-2-0.  Port Hawkesbury outshot Brookfield 49-46.  Jayden Muise scored twice for the Pirates with single markers going to Gregor Yoell, Owen Stockdale and Blake Hadley.

The Jr. Miners now at 6-2-1 as they head to Halifax Regional Municipality for a pair of games this weekend squeezed out a 6-4 win over the Scotians Sat Nov 13 in Membertou.  The teams traded goals until the mid-way mark of the third period when Nathan MacMillan and Brandon Grant scored the Jr. Miners 5th and 6th goals to record their 6-4 win.  Connor Aucoin had a huge night for the Scotians as he scored three times, his first on the power-play to open the game’s scoring, his second to bring the Scotians back to within one at 3-2 in the second and his third to tie the game at 3-3.  Coby McCarron for the Jr. Miners and Keegan Macumber of the Scotians then traded goals to tie the game again at 4-4 before Nathan MacMillan’s game winner for the Jr. Miners with 10:16 left in regulation.  Brandon Grant added an insurance marker for the Jr.Miners with 3:32 left in the third period.  Scoring other goals for the Jr. Miners were Archer Balcom, Blake Cox and Logan Snow.  Pictou has reached the 1/4 mark in their schedule at .500 with a 4-4-0 record.

OT needed in Strait, Liverpool scores easy win

The Liverpool Privateers despite coming off a 5-3 loss at home on Remembrance Day to Antigonish entered Friday evening’s Nov 12 game at CFB Shearwater against the Cole Harbour Capstone Colts knowing they were 5-4-1, yet only 5 points back of the 1st Place Sackville Blazers in the Fred Fox Division.  The Privateers did not suffer from any after thoughts about their loss Thursday as they came ready to rumble and easily upended the Colts 8-2.  The Privateers held period leads of 2-0 and 5-2 and received a five point night from Matt Ormon who scored three goals and added a pair of assists.  Alec Howie scored a pair and added 2 assists while Josh Nicholson scored once and added a couple of assists, Daniel LeBlanc added a short-handed marker and Daniel Kline were the other Privateer goal scorers.  Joshua McCarther had a night in nets for the Colts which he hopes to correct quickly as he allowed 8 goals on 33 shots as the Colts actually outshot the Privateers 38-33.  Tyler  and Cooper Puma connected for the Colts.  With the win, the Privateers go into their game in Sackville Monday night with a 6-4-1 record for 13 points and the potential to come out of Monday’s game tied with the Blazers for first place in the Fred Fox Division.  Elsewhere Friday Night:

It was an incredible game in the Strait Friday evening as Lewis Taylor’s goal 56 seconds into overtime finally provided a verdict  — a 4-3 Strait Pirates win over the Jr. Miners.  It improved Port Hawkesbury to 6-1-0 on the season while the Jr. Miners fell to 5-2-1.  Besides Taylor’s overtime winner, he scored another goal earlier in the game on the power-play while Brady MacNeil and Danny Gillis added single markers.  bLake cox on the power-play, Kody Groves and Josh MacKay scored the other Jr. Miner goals who now return to Membertou for a game with the Pictou County Scotians Saturday evening while Port Hawkesbury hits the road for a game in Brookfield Saturday afternoon.

The teams played a scoreless opening period before Alex Griffith put the blues up 1-0, 35 seconds into the middle period.  Justin Banks then scored for the Leafs with 4:18 remaining in the second to knot the game at 1-1.  Andrew McCarron and Brayden Hunt scored in the third period for the Leafs who won their third of the season and are now 3-6-0 on the season.  Cumberland fell to 2-7-1.  The Valley outshot the Blues 35-21.

Pens, Bulldogs win on Road Thursday, at home Friday

"Ain’t no stopping us now", was once a famous song in the Top 40 back in 1979 by a group known as McFadden and Whitehead and it appears the AA Munro Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs are following this great song if in title only as they are now 10-0-0 to begin the 21-22 NSJHL Season after clipping the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles 7-4 at home in Antigonish Friday Nov 12.

 
Antigonish jumped in front 7-0 until Eskasoni’s Kinnon Williams scored with 5:29 left in the second period on the power-play to provide the Eagles with their first goal.  The Jr. Bulldogs coming back from a long trip to Liverpool Thursday where they won 5-3, didn’t seem to be the least bit tired as sharpshooter Sam Mattie scored three times and added an assist while Fearghus MacDonald - the League’s Top Point Getter scored once and collected a pair of assists.  Will Fitzsimmons, Connor Doherty with the game winning goal 1:58 into the second and Ryan MacLellan all scored single goals for the Jr. Bulldogs who outshot the Jr. Eagles 45-32.  The Bulldogs will now push for their 11th straight win Sunday in Eskasoni when they complete a weekend home and home series with Eskasoni.
 
East Hants  13     Brookfield  3
 
The East Hants Penguins were coming off a lopsided 10-1 win over the Valley Maple Leafs Thursday afternoon in Windsor but returned home Friday evening to win their 6th of the season against five losses 13-3 over the Brookfield Elks.  The Penguins held period leads of 6-2 and 10-2 and received a five point night from Captain Max Turner who scored once and added 4 assists.  Morgan Lake recorded a four point evening with a pair of goals and 2 assists.  Three point evenings were recorded by Evan McHenry with 2 goals and an assist, Brody Fraser with a pair and another assist and Bruen Fisher with a goal and two assists.  Single goals were scored by Logan Colter, Ethan Wheeler, Devin Meagher, Nick Veinot and Gavin McCready.  Robbie Dowell also chipped in with 3 assists.  Scoring for the Elks were Calem McAndrew, Connor Miller and Noah Latimer.  East Hants outshot Brookfield 54-34.
