Jr. Bulldogs now 16-0-1, Pens win 9th of season

The AA Munro Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs keep on rolling with no let up in sight following their 16th win of the season Sunday night at home over the Port Hawkesbury Canadian Tire Strait Pirates by a score of 4-0.  Cody MacEachern continued his stellar goaltending blocking all 20 shots fired at him by the Pirates.  MacEachern now has a 12-0-1 record this season stopping 337 of 374 shots for a .901 save percentage.  Ethan Twolan and Darren Waterman put the Bulldogs up 2-0 after one period.  The teams went scoreless in the second before Waterman scored his second of the game as well as Sam Mattie in the third period to make the final 4-0.  This gave the Jr. Bulldogs a weekend sweep of their home and home series with the Strait Pirates having defeated them 7-1 in Port Hawkesbury Friday evening.  A total of 110 minutes in penalties were called in the game with 102 of them in the third period which proved to be a rugged affair with 2 majors, 2 match penalties and 6 misconducts handed out.  The Jr. Bulldogs have now opened up a 17 point lead over the Membertou Jr. Miners for first place in the Sid Rowe Division and will be back in action Friday night at home at the arena in Antigonish when they host the 7-5-3 Liverpool Privateers, a team the Jr. Bulldogs defeated in Liverpool back on Nov 11 by a count of 5-3.  Elsewhere on Sunday……

The Penguins and Scotians played their first game in a home and home series in Trenton Sunday night with the Pens winning 5-2.  They now go to Lantz for the second game of this home and home Friday Dec 10th.  The win for the now 9-6-0 Penguins moved them to within 3 points of the first place Sackville Blazers in the Fred Fox Division.  Evan McHenry who scored twice and added an assist put the Penguins out in front 1-0 early in the first period.  Hayden Burgess tied it for the Scotians before Sean Freeman scored the first of his two goals on the evening to give the Pens a 2-1 lead after twenty minutes.  A mere 6 seconds into the second period, Matt Carson tied it for the Scotians at 2-2 but with 6:47 left in the middle period, McHenry on the power-play scored the game winner for East Hants and gave them a 3-2 lead after two periods.  Freeman added his second of the game in the third and Bruen Fisher put one into an empty net with 5 seconds left in the third.  Gavin McCready picked up 3 assists for the Pens who outshot Pictou 48-37.
 
Eskasoni Jr. Eagles   8      Brookfield Elks   5
 
The Elks were coming into the Dan K. Stevens Memorial Arena in Eskasoni Sunday afternoon on a high after their 7-3 upset win over the Membertou Jr. Miners Saturday night.  The Elks were attempting to record their third win of the season and they played hard against the Jr. Eagles trailing 6-5 with 5:45 to play in the third but a pair of goals from Thomas Simon and Nicholas Pastuck with his second of the game in the final 2:06 gave Eskasoni an 8-5 win despite being outshot by the Elks 52-43.  Brookfield’s Noah Latimer with his first of two in the game opened the game’s scoring 56 seconds after the opening face-off before Pastuck scored his first to leave the teams tied at 1-1 after twenty minutes.  Adam Willison with his first of two and MacKenzie Erickson scored a minute apart before the second period was two minutes old to give the Jr. Eagles a 3-1 lead but the Elks Latimer and Calem McAndrew tied the game at 3-3 before Willison put the Jr. Eagles in front 4-3 going into the third period.  MacKenzie Erickson with his second of the game made it 5-3 Jr. Eagles before Connor Miller with his first of two for the Elks brought Brookfield back to within a goal.  It stayed 5-4 for only 53 seconds when MacQueen Kendall scored the game winner for Eskasoni.  Miller’s 2nd goal for the Elks brought them back to within 6-5 but they could not come up with the equalizer prior to the late goals by Simon and Pastuck.  Jaden Martin chipped in with three assists for the Jr. Eagles.  This concluded the two game regular season series between the two clubs as Eskasoni defeated the Elks in early November in Brookfield 5-4.

Elks surprise Jr. Miners - Colts win 5th straight

The engines have been revved for a period of time and when the Capstone Cole Harbour Colts shifted into drive over the past 8 days, there has been no stopping them as they recorded their 5th consecutive win Saturday Dec 4 at Queens Place Emera Centre 5-2 over the Liverpool Privateers. This was the third game of the four game regular season season schedule between the two teams and a far cry different from the last game when the Privateers slammed the Colts 8-2.  However the Colts lead the season series 2-1 but in the three games, the Privateers have outscored the Colts 11-10.  In Saturday’s game in Liverpool, Dylan Patterson put Liverpool ahead 1-0 1 minute and and 4 seconds into the game but it took only 1 minute and 8 seconds later for the Colts Brett Moore to tie the game at 1-1.  Will MacRae then added a pair of first period goals to give the Colts a 3-1 lead after twenty minutes.  Patrick Oxner scored in the second to provide the Colts who are now 8-5-0 on the season with a 4-1 lead after forty minutes.  Dylan Patterson then brought the home team back to within a pair of goals with 3:05 remaining in the game but the Privateers could not do anything else as Brady Crossley of the Colts scored into an empty net with 1 second left to give the Colts their 5-2 win.  With the loss the Privateers fell to 7-5-3 for 17 points, a single point ahead of the Colts who have 2 games in hand on the Privateers.  The Colts outshot Liverpool 36-27.  In one other game Saturday……..

The Elks with strong net minding from Pablo De Larrinaga recorded their second win of the season over the Membertou Jr. Miners in Membertou.  Nashon Thomas scored short-handed 1:33 into the game for the Elks before Connor MacIntyre tied it four minutes later.  Evan McNea then gave the Elks a 2-1 lead after one period when he scored on the power-play.  A total of five goals were scored in the second period with Connor Miller scoring twice for the Elks including the game winner and Jacob Bolger once while Ashton Paul and Blake Cox tallied for the Jr. Miners who trailed 5-3 after forty minutes.  The Jr. Miners could get nothing going to speak of the in the third period while Ben Fraser scored twice for the Elks including a power-play marker to make the final 7-3 Elks.  The Elks are now 2-10-1 and have recorded 3 of those five points against the Jr. Miners having lost a close 4-3 game to the Jr. Miners in Brookfield back in October.  The Elks in the two-game season series outscored the Jr. Miners 10-7. The Jr. Miners used two goaltenders as Spencer Shabib left after playing slightly more than 35 minutes and having allowed 5 goals on 25 shots.  The Elks by the time they are finished in Eskasoni Sunday afternoon will have played 14 of their 32 game schedule and will conclude the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule with back to back to home games against Sackville and the Valley Maple Leafs on Sat Dec 11 and Sat Dec 18 with both games starting at 4:00 p.m. at the Don Henderson Memorial Sportsplex,

Colts win their 4th straight, Jr. Bulldogs now 15-0-1

The Capstone Cole Harbour Colts were on the road in Windsor Friday Dec 3 to play the Valley Maple Leafs where they recorded their 4th consecutive win, 5-2 over the Leafs.  The Colts struck first on a goal off the stick of Will MacRae in the opening period.  In the second frame, Patrick Oxner had the Colts up 2-0 just 2:37 in before the Leafs who were outshot 2-1 by the Colts 51-25, struck for a pair of goals from Dawson Lavers and Andrew McCarron with his 9th of the season to knot the game 2-2 after forty minutes.  Special teams took over in the third for the Colts as Brayden Hooper-Richard scored the game winner - shorthanded  with 6:36 left in the contest to put the Colts up 3-2.  Brady Crossley made it 4-2 with 3:09 left and then Tyler Puma made the final 5-2 when he scored the Colts third unanswered goal of the third.  Cooper Puma collected a pair of assists for the Colts to give him his 10th and 11th on the season.  The Colts are now 7-5-0 on the season, good for fourth place in the Fred Fox Division but trail the East Hants Penguins by a pair of points for third place and the Liverpool Privateers by three points.  In fact they are only 7 back of the 1st place Sackville Blazers while holding a commanding 5 game in hand on the Blazers.  Elsewhere Friday night……..

The AA Munro Jr. Bulldogs after a couple of recent 1 and two goal victories, blew the barn door wide open on their arch-rival the Port Hawkesbury Canadian Tire Strait Pirates in the Strait Friday evening 7-1.  The Jr. Bulldogs now 15-0-1 led 2-0 after the first period and 4-0 after the second on goals from Connor Doherty, Sam MacNeill, Darren Waterman and Ethan Price.  34 seconds into the third the Bulldogs Ethan Twolan put Antigonish up 5-0 before the 7-4-1 Strait Pirates Gregor Yoell on the power-play ended up scoring the Strait’s lone goal of the game.  MacNeill with his second of the game and Zachary Stewart finished the game’s scoring giving the Bulldogs their 7-1 win.  These same two teams collide in Antigonish Sunday evening to complete their weekend home and home before the Canadian Tire Strait Pirates head to Sackville for a 7:30 start Monday evening.

The Cumberland County Blues went into Lantz Friday evening hoping for their 5th win of the season and they stayed pretty even with the Pens trailing only 4-3 as the second period reached it’s mid-way point.  However. the Pens then took control and went on to a 9-4 victory giving the Pens a 9-4 win and their 8th win of the season while having lost 6.  Cumberland County now 1 game shy of the half-way mark in their 21-22 schedule suffered their 10th loss to go along with 4 wins and an overtime/shoot-out loss.  Logan Colter, Brody Fraser and Marshall Plaandowski scored a pair of goals each for the Pens with singles going to Nick Veinot, Tyler Thomas short-handed and Sean Freeman who also chipped in with a pair of assists.  Bruen Fisher also recorded 3 assists for the Pens and Evan McHenry also recorded 2 assists for the Pens who now trail the 2nd place Liverpool Privateers by a single point in the Fred Fox Division.  Jessie Estabrooks scored twice for the Blues with singles going to Nate Stone and Ezekiel Cormier.  East Hants outshot the Blues 46-27.  The Pens will conclude the pre-Christmas portion of their 21-22 schedule with a home and home series against the Pictou County Scotians starting Sunday in Trenton before coming back to Lantz Friday Dec 10 for a 7:30 start and then wrapping up until 2022 by hosting the Sackville Blazers Friday, Dec 17 at home at 7:30 p.m.  The Blues will also surpass the half-way of their schedule with 2 road games before the Christmas break.  They visit the Capstone Cole Harbour Colts in Shearwater Friday Dec 10 and then go to Membertou for a Saturday Dec 18 game with the Jr. Miners at 7:30 p.m.

Blazers lose 3rd straight

The Capstone Cole Harbour Colts handed the 1st Place Sackville Blazers their third consecutive loss Monday evening at the Sackville Arena.  Both teams were finishing a 3 games in 4 nights stand which began with the Colts defeating the Blazers 4-2 at C.F.B. Shearwater Friday evening.  In the first period Zephrin Hachey scored for the Blazers at the 10:54 mark and exactly seven minutes later with slightly less than 4 minutes left in the first period, Brayden Hooper-Richard scored the first of his to goals on the evening.  Richard gave the Colts a 2-1 lead in the second and then Cooper Puma made it 3-1 Colts after two.  The closest Sackville could get after this was a marker from Spencer Langille-Crowe with 18 seconds left in regulation.  The Blazers outshot the Colts 50-45.  The Colts have now won 2 of 3 against the Blazers this season and do not clash again until Mon  Feb 28 in Sackville.  In the three games played between the two clubs to date this season, both teams have scored 9 goals against each other. Brady Crossley added a pair of assists for the Colts who improved to 6-5-0 while winning their 3rd consecutive game and 12 points, 2 back of third place East Hants in the Fred Fox Division. The Blazers are now 10-6-1 for 2 points.  The Blazers are now preparing for a huge game with the 7-3-1 Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates Mon Dec 6 at 7:30 in Sackville.  The Colts meanwhile have 4 games remaining on their schedule prior to the Christmas break.  They will play on the road this weekend Friday, Dec 3 and Sat Dec 4 in the Valley and in Liverpool Saturday Dec 5 before returning home for two games against Cumberland Fri Dec 10 and Sat Dec 11 against the Valley Maple Leafs - both games at C.F.B. Shearwater.

Scotians 5 wins in 6 games - Blazers lose again

The Pictou County Scotians are on the move and Sunday Night Nov 28 at home in Trenton won their 7th game and their 5th in their past 6 in a shoot-out 4-3 win over the Membertou Jr. Miners.  The Scotians Hayden Burgess opened the game’s scoring short-handed for the Scotians with under 4 minutes to play in the opening period but Nathaniel Fuller tied it for the Jr. Miners with 1:28 left in the opening frame.  The second period was almost identical but this time Fuller put the Jr. Miners up 2-1 on the power-play before Matt Chediac tied the game at 2 for the Scotians with 1:58 showing on the clock for the duration of the second period.  The third period saw the Scotians go up 3-2 on a goal from Thomas Kennaley before Fuller finished with his hat-trick as well as his 11th goal of the season with just 2:30 left in regulation to once again knot the game, this time at 3-3.  Alex MacKinnon finished with assists on all 3 Jr. Miner goals and Pictou outshot the Jr. Miners 43-30.  The sudden-death was scoreless as were the Jr. Miners on the three shots they took in the shoot-out.  The Scotians Connor Aucoin scored on his first shot for Pictou and it proved to be the only goal of the six shots as Matt Carson and Kennaley both missed.  The Scotians are now 7-4-0 on the season and 1 point out of third place and 2 points out of second place in the Sid Rowe Division while Membertou finished with 1 of a possible 4 points over the weekend and now stand at 7-4-2 for 16 points.

 
The AA Munro Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs racked up their 14th win of the season Sunday evening at home 4-3 over the Brookfield Elks and have now accumulated 29 of a possible 30 points in 15 games to date this season.   Will Fitzsimmons and Callum Bouma exchanged goals in the opening period to leave the clubs tied at 1 after twenty minutes.  In the second Fitzsimmons goal, the fourth of the period tied the game at 3-3 after Ben Fraser and Connor Miller had given the Elks a 3-2 lead.  Ben Fraser gave the Elks a 2-1 lead 11 seconds into the second before Jake MacDonald tied it for the Jr. Bulldogs at 2-2 38 seconds later.  Connor Miller put the elks ahead 3-2 before the Bulldogs Will Fitzsimmons tied the game at 3-3 entering the third period.  Early in the third Fearghus MacDonald scored his 13th of the season and it was the only goal of the third to give the Jr. Bulldogs the 4-3 verdict.  Antigonish outshot Brookfield 37-23 and took the season series 2-0, outscoring the Elks 9-7 in the two games played between the clubs.  While their record may not indicate it yet, the 1-10-1 Elks are proving to be a real competitor this season playing exceptionally close games with a number of teams as they prepare for their weekend road trip to Cape Breton this Saturday and Sunday to play Membertou and Eskasoni.

The Liverpool Privateers quickly regrouped after their stunning 3-2 overtime loss to Cumberland Saturday evening at Queens Place Emera Centre to squeak by the Sackville Blazers 4-3 Sunday afternoon in Liverpool.  The win for the 7-4-3 Privateers brings them to within 4 points of the first place Blazers in the Fred Fox Division.  Kayden Nickerson scored 31 seconds into the opening period which proved to be the only goal of the first and the Privateers were up 1-0 after one.  There was a flurry of scoring in the second as the teams were deadlocked at 3-3 after forty minutes.  Nickerson added his second of the afternoon on the power play and Alec Howie a single marker for the Privateers while Degen Noble scored his 13th and 14th goals of the season and Stephen Purdy added a single marker for the Blazers. With 5:42 left in regulation, Josh Nicholson on the power-play scored the game winner for the Privateers who outshot the Blazers 43-27.  The Blazers now return home Monday night in hopes of avoiding a three-game losing streak when they host the Capstone Cole Harbour Colts.  The Privateers will now get ready for the Colts this Saturday, Dec 4 before thinking about their game with the Jr. A Bulldogs in Antigonish Friday evening Dec 10 and a home game with Eskasoni Sat Dec 11th.

Thomas Simon scored his 12th, 13th and 14th goals of the season to pace the Jr. Eagles over the Valley Maple Leafs 5-3 in Eskasoni Sunday afternoon.  Simon and Matthew Benedict of the Leafs traded goals in the opening period before Simon completed his hat-trick with a pair in the second period to put the Jr. Eagles up 3-1 after forty minutes.  Andrew McCarron and Ryan MacDonald on the power-play tied it for the Leafs, MacDonald’s goal coming with just 5:32 left but the Leafs couldn’t hang on as MacKenzie Erickson notted the game winning goal with 3:29 left in regulation and Adam Wilison put one into an empty net with 1:04 showing on the clock to give the 5-9-0 Jr. Eagles the 5-3 win over the 4-9-0 Leafs.  The Jr. Eagles outshot the Leafs 43-31 and they will play the second game of their regular season home and home Friday Dec 10 in Windsor at 7:30 p.m.

Blues stun Liverpool -- Leafs upend Membertou

A shocker in Liverpool at the Queens Place Emera Centre Saturday evening as the Cumberland Blues came back from their shut-out loss to the Pictou County Scotians Friday night at home to eke out a 3-2 sudden-death overtime win over the Privateers.  Zack Gould’s goal just 21 seconds into the five-minute overtime period was all the Blues required for the win and to improve their record to 4-9-1.  Alec Howie and Jacob Estabrooks tallied single markers in the first as teams entered the second tied at 1-1.  Liverpool’s Whelan Matthews goal in the second provided the Privateers with a 2-1 lead after forty minutes before Jacob Estabrooks with his second of the game tied it for the Blues mid-way through the third.  Jacob also assisted on the overtime winner while Jessie Estabrooks chipped in with a pair of assists.  Joshua Doyle was rock solid in the Blues net, turning away 49 of 51 shots as Liverpool outshot Cumberland 51-25.  Daniel Kline assisted on both goals for the Privateers.

The Capstone Cole Harbour Colts after their upset win over the Sackville Blazers at home Friday evening went to the Don Henderson Memorial Sportsplex Saturday afternoon Nov 27 and nosed out the Brookfield Elks 4-3 to even their record at 5-5-0 in the 21-22 NSJHL season.  Will MacRae provided the Colts with a 1-0 lead after twenty minutes before Evan McNea tied it for the Elks 1:40 into the second period.  Cole Good then put the Colts up by a goal once again with 8:31 to play in the second.  With only three goals in the opening two periods, the teams launched up their offence in the third period with a pair of goals apiece.  Brayden Hooper-Richard put the Colts ahead 3-1 4:29 into the third before the Elks stormed back with a pair as Connor Miller scored for the Elks 1:16 later and that in turn was followed by a tying goal from Noah Latimer 1:45 later.  The flurry of scoring finished 1:20 later when Tyler Puma scored the game winner for the Colts who outshot the Elks 39-29.  MacRae, Good, and Puma all added a single assist for the Colts while Latimer also added an assist for the Elks.

Andrew McCarron had a prolific night on offence for the Valley Maple Leafs scoring once and assisting on his team’s other three goals as the Leafs after losing in Port Hawkesbury Friday night, rallied to defeat the Membertou Jr. Miners 4-2.  McCarron’s goal in the first period Saturday came on a penalty shot and Ben Lawrence then scored for the Leafs to give them a 2-0 lead after one period.  Nathaniel Fuller then scored for the Jr. Miners mid-way through the second to bring the Jr. Miners back to within a goal before Brady MacLean made it 3-1 Leafs with under five minutes to play in the second.  MacLean’s goal proved to be the game winner.  Blake Cox then brought the Jr. Miners back to within a goal but it was all the scoring to be done by Membertou. The final goal of the game was an empty-net marker by the Leafs Griffin Radford with 3 seconds to play.  Aidan Durnford played a strong game for the Leafs in nets as the Jr. Miners outshot the Valley 45-29.  Ashton Paul assisted on other Jr. Miner goals.
