Leafs stunned by Elks

Elks surprise Leafs with 4 goal explosion and Lumberjacks fall to Colts

If the Valley Maple Leafs somehow miss the playoffs by a point or two, one game during the 24-25 regular season will haunt them.  The Leafs after losing 5-4 in sudden-death overtime to the powerful East Hants Penguins Friday night travelled to Brookfield to play the last place Elks Saturday afternoon.  The game was proceeding very well for the Leafs in the first 35 minutes of the contest until they were hit by a freight train as the Elks scored four times to rally from a 6-3 deficit to win 7-6.

In a span of 35 seconds in the second period, the Leafs went up 6-3 on a pair of goals from Aiden MacLeod, only to see sharpshooter Jackson Spraggon score to make it 6-4 and then score again with 3:21 left in the second to make it 6-5.  Sam Rogers then scored two more in the third period and the Leafs lost 7-6 to fall to 7-12-1 and 3 points behind the South Shore Lumberjacks in the chase for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Fred Fox Division.

The Leafs took a 3-2 lead after the opening period as Cody Hebb notched his 2nd goal of the season, MacLeod scoring his first of three and Nick Vidito also scoring while Bryson Currie and Chaz Lockhart with a power-play marker scored for the Elks.
The second period opened with the Elks Jackson Spraggon’s scoring his first of three in the period before Cameron Barnes made it 4-3 that were in turn followed by MacLeod’s remaining two goals to put the Leafs up 6-3 with 5:28 to play in the second.  Spraggon also added an assist to go with his three goals while Jack Piper assisted on four and Keegan Macumber 3 of the Elks seven goals.  The second period saw 65 penalty minutes called with 48 going to the Leafs.

The rest is history as the Elks stunned the Leafs with four unanswered goals to earn their fourth win of the season.  The Leafs did outshoot the Elks 47-40.

Capstone Colts   5       South Shore Lumberjacks   2

Brandon Rideout scored for the South Shore 5:29 into their game with the Colts in Bridgewater Saturday night but it was the only goal they could manage until there was 2:05 left in the game as the Lumberjacks allowed the Colts five goals between their two to lose 5-2 and fall below .500 again to 9-10-0.   The Colts meanwhile improved to 15-7-0.

After Rideout’s goal, Jack Dulong and Luke McPhee scored in the first to give the Colts a 2-1 lead after twenty minutes and they scored three more in the second on a pair from Liam Andrews and another from Nick Morin to go up 5-1 entering the third.  Kyle MacIntyre’s power-play goal for the South Shore was the only goal in the third.  The Colts outshot the Lumberjacks 45-35.
