A look at Special Teams and their production

Special teams and who are effective with them play a critical role for any team in a hockey season.  That of course means taking penalties and killing them while taking advantage of teams who have a difficult time staying out of the “sin bin”. Entering the final 1/3 of the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League’s Regular season, we are going to take a look at teams who are playing disciplined hockey and being rewarded for it.  The following is a list of the 11 League Teams and the penalty minutes they have totalled along with the average number of minutes they are getting per game.

 
  • Sackville Blazers — 295 Penalty Minutes or 15.52 minutes a game
  • Antigonish — 332 Penalty Minutes or 16.6 minutes a game
  • Port Hawkesbury — 370 Penalty Minutes — 16.81 minutes a game
  • Pictou — 342 minutes or 17.1 minutes a game
  • Capstone — 378 Penalty Minutes or 18.9 a game
  • Membertou — 395 Penalty Minutes or 19.75 a game
  • East Hants — 406 Penalty Minutes or 20.3 a game
  • Eskasoni — 407 Penalty Minutes or 20.35 a game
  • Valley Maple Leafs — 430 Penalty Minutes or 23.88 a game
  • South Shore Lumberjacks — 471 Penalty Minutes or 26.16 minutes a game
  • Brookfield Elks — 575 Penalty Minutes or 30.26 minutes a game.
 
Penalty killers playing extraordinarily while handcuffed are the Antigonish Bulldogs who have killed 92% of the Penalties assessed against them.  East Hants has killed off 91% of their penalties and the Colts are third in penalty killing percentages, killing off 90% of what they have been assessed.  The following are percentages of power-play and penalty killing done by teams:
