Colts surprise Pens for 2nd Friday night in a row

The East Hants Penguins have been left scratching their heads after back to back losses to the Capstone Colts which have pulled the Colts to within eight points of the Pens and first place in the Fred Fox Division.  The teams are 2-2-0 after four games this season with the Penguins outscoring the Colts 20-19 in those four games,  They have one regular-season game to play against each other coming up Sunday, Jan 12th in Lantz at 7:00 p.m.

As far as the two most recent losses suffered by the 17-3-0 Pens against the 13-7-0 Colts, they have come on back to back Friday nights.  The first was a 7-2 win by the Colts in Lantz Dec 6th and the second one Friday night December 13th at C.F.B. Shearwater by a score of 5-3.

Even more surprising is the fact that in between these two games, the Colts allowed the Sackville Blazers to snap their five-game losing streak as the Blazers rallied from a 6-4 deficit after one period to defeat the Colts 8-6.

In Friday’s game in Shearwater, the Colts fell behind early 1-0 on a goal from the Pens Jayson Hanson but 1:59 later Finn Merritt scored his 15th goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.  With only 31 seconds to play in the opening period, Jacob Trioni-Willis put the Colts up 2-1.

In the second period, Cooper Puma scored the first of his two goals on the night giving the Colts a 3-1 lead before Ethan Hines and Jacob Sanford tied the game in 2:41 of play at 3-3.  However with only 1:49 to play in the middle period, Finn Merritt scored his second of the game and 16th of the year to tie Devin Meagher for the goal scoring lead in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League and put the Colts up 4-3.

There was only one goal registered in the third and it was by Cooper Puma of the Colts with his second of the game and to give the Colts their 5-3 win.

Conar Brace turned away 30 of 33 shots for the Colts in a winning effort while Fintan Boudreau took the loss for the Penguins with East Hants pulling Boudreau in the final 1:12 of the third period for an extra attacker.

One game now remains prior to the Christmas break with Membertou in Eskasoni Sunday afternoon. The Christmas break will then be officially underway with play not resuming until Friday, January 3 on four fronts with Eskasoni visiting Antigonish, Pictou in Port Hawkesbury, Brookfield to play the Colts and the Penguins visiting the Valley Maple Leafs in Windsor.  All games will start at 7:30 p.m.
