Jr. Miners win in OT

The Membertou Jr. Miners have four games in hand on the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates but their 4-3 overtime win over the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles Sunday night in Eskasoni moved the Jr. Miners to within a single point of the Pirates for third place in  the Sid Rowe Division.  Drew Baldwin scored 46 seconds into the five-minute sudden death overtime for the Jr. Miners who had allowed the Jr. Eagles to tie the game with a pair of goals from Arlen Denny and Keagen Geizer in the final 4:31 of the third period.  Alex Chenhall had given Membertou a 3-1 lead early in the third.  The Jr. Miners led 1-0 after one period on goal from Brady Doucette and led 2-1 after forty minutes.  Ryan Aucoin tied the game at 1-1 for Eskasoni before Garrett MacIntosh put the Jr. Miners back in front 2-1.  Eskasoni outshot the Jr. Miners 43-38 but Lucas Fraser stopped 40 of the 43 shots he faced while Darian McInnis stopped 34 of 38 shots for the Jr. Eagles.  The win improves Membertou’s season record to 7-9-1 for 15 points compared to the Strait’s 7-12-2 mark for 16 points.

The Strait Pirates now have only 9 games left in the regular season after being doubled up by the Pictou County Scotians 4-2 in Trenton Sunday evening.  Lane Lochead continued his torrid scoring of late, scoring three times while adding an assist giving him 5 goals and 11 assists in six Scotian games since Remembrance Day.  On the season, he now has 10 goals and 19 assists for 29 points and is tied with Devin Meagher of East Hants for the League scoring lead although Meagher does have 15 goals.  Lochead scored the final goal in each period for the Scotians while assisting on Cale MacLaughlin’s game winner early in the third.  Noah Harrison and Landon MacIntosh scored 17 seconds apart early in the second to give the Strait a 2-1 lead until Lochead tied the game at 2-2 with under three minutes to play in the middle frame.  The Scotians outshot the Strait Pirates 41-34 as Eli James turned away 32 of 34 shots for Pictou. Manny Strong stopped 37 of 41 shots for the Strait.  Pictou improved to 10-5-3 for 23 points but remain a distant 9 points behind first place Antigonish.
