Elks break 10 game losing streak
The Brookfield Elks finally ended their 10 game losing streak Saturday afternoon at home as they caught the Sackville Blazers off guard with a 5-2 win. It was the fourth meeting of the season between the Elks and the Blazers with Sackville now holding a 3-1-0 mark against the Elks and Brookfield is 1-2-1. The Blazers have outscored the Elks 18-16 in the four games, with their final game of the regular season scheduled for Monday, Jan 13th in Sackville.
On Saturday, the Elks came out storming scoring three times in the first period to take a 3-0 lead after one. Brodie Ellis scored the first Elks goal and then Nate Grafstein scored his first goal since Oct 5 against the Valley. Grafstein wasn’t finished for the day as he scored two more, giving him four on the season. His third goal of the game came on an Elks power-play in the second and gave his club a 4-1 lead after Aiden Clowater had pulled the Blazers to within two. With the Elks lead at 4-1, Tyler Curnew added a late second period goal for the Blazers and Sackville went to their dressing room trailing 4-2 after forty minutes. Neither team could produce any offence in the third period until Will Singer put one into an empty Blazers net with a minute to play to make the Final 5-2 Brookfield. Jackson Spraggon recorded 4 assists on the afternoon for the Elks giving him 5 goals and 11 assists for 16 point this season. Cale Echlin making only his second start of the year in nets for Brookfield stopped 44 of 46 shots as the Elks were outshot by the Blazers 46-39. What the third period lacked in offence, it provided in plenty of hard feelings as the two teams recorded 82 penalty minutes between them including four fighting majors, 4 game misconducts and 1 Gross Misoncduct. The Elks heading into their game this Friday in Windsor take a 3-12-1 record to play the Maple Leafs at 7:30 p.m.
