Penguins rout Elks again
The East Hants Penguins are within one-game of the half-way mark in their 2024-25 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Regular Season and they have now won 14 straight games. The Valley Maple Leafs were concentrating heavily on how they could win their fourth game in five starts but ended up losing a squeaker 2-1 to the Membertou Jr. Miners. The following is a recap of Saturday night action:
East Hants 8 Brookfield 3
The Penguins are now 14-0-0 following an 8-3 win in Brookfield Saturday afternoon. Aiden Gloade in his third season with the Elks opened the game’s scoring giving Brookfield a 1-0 lead but that quickly evaporated as East Hants struck for three unanswered goals after that to put the Pens up 3-1 after one period. Noah Comeau, Tucker Hayse and Nick Veinot replied for East Hants. The Pens on a goal from Jason Hanson went up 4-1 in the second period before Bryson Currie brought the Elks back to within a pair at 4-2. Devin Meagher made it 5-2 East Hants on a short-handed effort before Jacob Bolger brought the Elks back to within two goals once again at 5-3 on the power-play. However, it was the final goal to be scored by the Elks as East Hants scored three more, a pair from Jacob Sanford and Ethan Hines to conclude the second and another from Hayden Tamm in the third to make the final 8-3. Jacob Sanford besides his goal, also collected 3 assists and Meagher with his goal for the Pens added 2 assists. Ty Campbell collected three assists for the Penguins. East Hants in handing the Elks their eighth consecutive loss outshot Brookfield 59-42. After 20 minutes in penalties being called in total through 40 minutes, the teams evidently became upset with each other and garnered 86 minutes alone in the third period which included 5 misconducts and a game misconduct. East Hants has now defeated Brookfield in all three games played between them to date this season, outscoring them 21-9 over the three games.
The next huge game for the Penguins will come at home Friday Nov 15 when they play the three time defending provincial champions and two-time defending Atlantic Champions, the Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs are off to a 12-2-0 start in 24-25.
Membertou Jr. Miners 2 Valley Maple Leafs 1
The Leafs who have been playing so well of late especially on defence were looking for their fourth win in five games but despite another strong defensive game lost 2-1 to the Jr. Miners. After a scoreless first period, Brady Doucette put the Jr. Miners up 1-0 after forty minutes before Landon Clark’s power-play goal made it 2-0 Jr. Miners with 8:52 left in regulation while Justin Banks was serving a slashing penalty for the Leafs. The Jr. Miners outshot the Leafs 35-27 with Jackson Murphy stopping 33 of 35 shots for the Leafs and Lucas Fraser 26of 27 for the Jr. Miners. Alex Chenhall recorded assists on both Jr. Miner goals.
