OK Corral Shoot-out in Strait

It was a wild shoot-out which kept fans in the Civic Centre in Port Hawkesbury on the edge of their seats for the majority of the game Tuesday evening Sonny Kabatay scored seconds into sudden-death overtime to finally give the Jr. Miners an 8-7 win over the Strait Pirates and a 2-0 lead in their Best-of-Seven Rowe Divisional Semi-Final.  Game 3 goes tonight in Membertou at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday’s game saw no team capable of holding any kind of lead whether it be by four goals or a single marker as the Jr. Miners struck early and often in the opening period taking a 4-0 lead after twenty minutes on a pair off goals from Nathaniel Fuller who also recorded two assists on the evening and goals from Kabatay and Tye Clarke.  In the second period, it was the complete opposite as after Matthew Ellis scored for the Pirates only to see Tyler Seymour extend the Jr. Miners’s lead to 4 goals again at 5-1 only 2:05 into the second, the Pirates kept working and kept the Jr. Miners off the scoreboard until there was slightly more than 7 minutes to play in the second.  Then in a span of eight seconds, Cadyn Power scored two of his three goals on the evening for the Pirates while also garnering an assist to make it 5-3 Jr. Miners.  Before the second period concluded Chase Ellis and Danny Gillis scored for the Pirates to send the teams to their dressing rooms tied at a 5-5 after forty minutes.

In the third, Blake MacDonnell put the Pirates up 6-5 only 2:36 into the final period of regulation.  Adam Hicks then tied it at 6-6 for the Jr. Miners only 42 seconds later.  That was all the scoring until less than six minutes to play when Power scored his third of the night for the Pirates to make the score 7-6.  The Strait could not hang on however as Hicks tallied his second of the night only 1:57 later to go along with a pair of assists to knot the game at 7-7 and send the game into sudden-death overtime.  Kabatay then tallied the OT marker to give him a five point night as he also garnered thee assists.

The Strait and Membertou are one of three games on the playoff slate tonight with the Sackville Blazers hoping to avoid a four game sweeps as they host the Capstone Colts in Sackville while the East Hants Penguins take their 2-0 series lead to the South Shore for a 7:30 clash with the Lumberjacks at 7:30 p.m.
