Fuller 4 pt night in Jr. Miners opening playoff win

One team has moved up 2 games in their Best-of-Seven Divisional Semi-Final while another series opened in the Sid Rowe Division.  The following is a recap from play Saturday night.

Colts 5     Sackville   3

The Colts moved up 2-0 in their Fred Fox Divisional Semi-Final with their second consecutive 5-3 win over the Blazers at C.F.B. Shearwater.  Sharp shooter Liam Andrews who led the league in regular season in goals scored and who scored in pair in Friday night’s opening 5-3 win, struck early for the Colts Saturday, putting Capstone ahead 1-0 just 2:59 into the first period.  The Blazers who were hoping to tie the series at 1-1 going back to Sackville Monday night, rallied to jump in front 2-1 on a short-handed goal from Justin Hardie and another goal from Ethan Black.  The Colts were not finished in the first as Nik Xidos and Cody Garcia scored and put the Colts up 3-2 after the opening period.

In the second, Noah Latimer made it 4-2 Colts while also collecting a pair of assists for a three point night.  In the third the Blazers moved to within a goal on Stephen Purdy’s marker just 1:01 into the final period of regulation, but 19 seconds later Nick Morin put the Colts back in front 5-3 and it was all the scoring the game would see.  The Blazers pulled Ben Etsell from their net for the final 1:13 hoping for some magic that never materialized.  Etsell stopped 35 of 40 shots while Connor Brace turned away 30 of 33 shots.

Sackville will host the Colts Monday night at 7:30 and will be doing their utmost to keep from falling behind 3-0 in the series.

Membertou Jr. Miners   5          Port Hawkesbury    4

The Strait Pirates dug in hard but simply could not overcome a three-goal lead they gave the Jr. Miners in the third period.  Alec Campbell, Alexander Chenhall and Nathaniel Fuller all scored in the third to give the Jr. Miners a 5-2 lead with 2:08 remaining in regulation.  The Pirates were far from finished however as Danny Gillis with his second of the night, tallied 18 seconds after the Jr. Miners goal to close the gap to 5-3 and then Keir Jordan with only 54 seconds left in regulation brought the Pirates to within 5-4 but it was as far as they could get to tying the game.  Fuller scored two goals and added two helpers on the night for a four point night.

In the opening period, Fuller put the Jr. Miners up 1-0 before the Strait struck for a pair from Danny Gillis and Luke Baldwin’s power-play as the Strait went ahead 2-1.  Landon Clark tied it for the Jr. Miners with only 3 seconds left in the second.  The Jr. Miners outshot the Strait 48-32.  Game 2 in this series resumes Monday night in Port Hawkesbury at 7:30 p.m.
