Ole Man Winter strikes again Saturday
Just when it appeared the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League would wrap up peacefully and teams with re-scheduled games would be able to play this weekend without any more postponements, Ole Man Winter struck with a vengeance Saturday with snow, freezing rain and ice pellets forcing the cancellation of two games. The first was in Brookfield between the Blazers and Elks and the second in Bridgewater between the Colts and Lumberjacks. There was only one game played and the following is a recap.
Membertou Jr. Miners 3 Eskasoni Jr. Eagles 2
The Jr. Eagles played the Jr. Miners tough and took a 2-0 lead on a power-play goal from Jacob Wolodka and another from Noah MacKinnon before the Jr. Miners rallied to collect their 20th win of the season in 31 games. Sonny Kabatay’s power-play goal with 41 seconds to play in the opening period pulled the Jr. Miners to within one goal of Eskasoni. Tyson LeFrense scored in the second period and and then Alex MacKinnon tallied the game winner for the Jr. Miners with 7:25 to play. There were 100 minutes in penalties dished out including 68 in a chippy second period which saw nine minors, 2 fighting majors, 2 game misconducts and 2 misconducts handed out. The Jr. Miners held a 32-27 shots advantage over the Jr. Eagles.
Games Remaining in Regular Schedule:
The Colts and Lumberjacks will conclude their regular season in Bridgewater Sunday afternoon and East will conclude their regular season at home to Brookfield Sunday evening. Port Hawkesbury and Membertou will conclude their 32 game regular season Monday night in Membertou before opening the first round of the Best-of-Seven Rowe Divisional Semi-Final later next week.
