Fraser's OT goal wins it for Colts
Two games in the NSJHL on the Holiday Monday Feb 19 as the league moves even closer to the completion of the regular season. The following is a recap:
Capstone Colts 2 Sackville Blazers 1 (Overtime)
The Colts moved six points in front of both the East Hants Penguins and South Shore Lumberjacks for first place in the Fred Fox Division on Ben Fraser’s overtime goal with 32 seconds left in the five-minute sudden death overtime period. It was the Colts 24th win in 30 regular season games this season. The Colts have two games remaining in their schedule with East Hants playing the Colts at C.F.B. Shearwater Friday evening before the Colts close the regular season in Bridgewater Saturday night against the Lumberjacks.
The Colts with one win can secure first place but if for example a tie does happen, the weekend games will be even more important as the Colts have a season record of 2-0-1 against the Penguins and are 2-1-0 against the Lumberjacks but the South Shore is 1-1-1 against the Colts. It could be a real maze to figure everything out if the Colts cannot secure a regulation win. If they do, the real battle will be to see who gets home ice advantage between the South Shore and East Hants as they are presently tied with records of 21-7-1 and both hold a game in hand on the Colts.
As for Monday night’s overtime win, Xavier Coggins scored with 43 seconds to play in the opening period before Adam Maillet tied it for the Blazers late in the second. That was all the scoring until Fraser’s overtime winner. There were only four minor penalties called in the contest with the Colts outshooting the Blazers 47-36. The Colts and Blazers completed their season series with the Blazers actually winning it five points to four as the Colts were 2-2-0 while the Blazers were 2-1-1. Both teams scored 14 goals against each other in the four games.
Membertou Jr. Miners 3 South Shore Lumberjacks 1
The Jr. Miners hosted the holiday matinee in a make-up game and dealt the Lumberjacks a loss they were certainly hoping to avoid. Tyson LeFrense for the Jr. Miners and Joe Osborne for the Lumberjacks scored in the first period before Landon Clark’s goal with 4:25 to play in the second proved to be the winner for the Jr. Miners who moved back into a second place tie with the Strait Pirates for second place in the Sid Rowe Division, both clubs now have 35 points. Alex MacKinnon scored the game’s final goal for Membertou into an empty net. The teams fired 31 shots apiece at their respective rival goalies. The Jr. Miners swept the season series over the South Shore having won 4-3 in Bridgewater back in September.
Three key games on the schedule for Tuesday night with the Lumberjacks playing in Brookfield, Pictou playing the Strait in Port Hawkesbury and Membertou traveling to Antigonish. All games start at 7:30 p.m.
