Antigonish wins their 25th of the season
The Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs coming off only their second regulation loss of 23-24 on Friday night, bounced back quickly with three first period goals Saturday night in Membertou to down the Jr. Miners 3-2. The Jr. Miners could only manage single goals in both the second and third period to remain tied with the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates for second place in the Rowe Division. The win for Antigonish was their 25th in 29 games this season.
Zachary Lorette, Tully Grant and Bradley Armstrong were the Bulldog scorers in the opening period while Tyler Cormier scored in the second and Trey Sturge’s short-handed effort was the only goal for the Jr. Miners in the final period. The Jr. Bulldogs outshot the Jr. Miners 43-31. Elsewhere Saturday:
South Shore 5 East Hants 2
The host Lumberjacks bounced back from a 3-2 loss to the 5th place Valley Maple Leafs on Thursday night to handle East Hants Saturday evening by a score of 5-2. Davis Cooper opened the game’s scoring for the Penguins before Cohen Westlake scored the first of his two goals in the opening period with Joe Osborne adding the third goal. Osborne and Westlake’s goals came in the final 0.49 seconds of the first period. In the second, Joe Osborne scored his second for the winners as they went up 4-1 before Blake irvine brought the pens back to within a pair before the second period concluded. The only goal of the third period came from the Lumberjacks Daniel LeBlanc who scored into an empty with seconds showing on the clock to make the final 5-2 South Shore. East Hants outshot the Lumberjacks 43-33. The win enabled the Lumberjacks to improve to 21-6-1 and tie the Penguins for 2nd place in the Fox, 4 points back of the Capstone Colts.
The Lumberjacks will play three make-up games in three days starting in Membertou Monday afternoon at 2:30 before going to Brookfield Tuesday evening and East Hants Wednesday evening. The South Shore then concludes their regular season Saturday night Feb 24 at home against the Capstone Colts and depending on what happens with the Lumberjacks in their 3 road games this week, Saturday night could conceivably a show-down at the high-k-corral for 1st place in the Fox Division.
Brookfield 5 Valey Maple Leafs 1
The Valley played their fifth game in nine days in Brookfield Saturday afternoon and now have only one game left in their 23-24 regular season and that will be at home this Friday, Feb 23 against these same Elks. Friday’s game could be pivotal as far as Draft Picks are concerned, of course depending on what the Leafs and Elks did or did not do with their draft picks in trades over the course of the season.
The Leafs coming off an emotional 3-2 win in bridgewater Thursday evening, seemed to be running out of gas as the Elks dumped them 5-1 despite the Leafs hanging tough and outshooting the Elks 35-34. Keegan Macumber who did not follow in the shoes of his famous late GrandFather Billy Macumber, a well known Softball Fastpitch Pitcher throughout the Maritimes or his Dad Tim Macumber considered t be one of the best Fastpitch players in the world at one point in his career. Keegan however did his job just like his late Grandfather and Father always did as he scored a goal and an assist to pace the Elks to their 5-1 win. Daniel MacKenzie’s goal was the other Brookfield goal in the opening period which put his club up 2-0 before the Leafs came back for their one goal of the game from Ben Lawrence to make it 2-1 Elks after twenty minutes. Calem McAndrew increased the elks lead to 3-1 with his second period goal before Hayden Richardson and Jayden Matthews on the power-play concluded the game’s scoring in the third for the Elks. Going int this Friday’s game, the Leafs are 2-1-0 against the Elks this season while the Elks are 1-1-1. The Elks currently stand at 8-17-2 and the Leafs at 8-21-2.
