East Hants mired in dreadful slump....Scotians take over first place in Rowe

The Pictou County Scotians have moved into sole position of first place in the Sid Rowe division after winning their fifth consecutive game Friday night in Antigonish, 4-2 over the Jr. Bulldogs.  Chris Jorden of the Scotians and Owen Forsythe of the Bulldogs scored to have the teams tied at 1 after the opening period.

The second proved to be scoreless before Jorden knotted his second of the game followed by a goal from Porter McNamara to put the Scotians up by a pair at 3-1 in the third.  Daniel Chaisson then brought the Bulldogs back to within a single goal before Sam Maddison buried one into an empty net to give the Scotians the win.  Pictou improved to 12-9-0 for 24 points while the Bulldogs are now third at 9-8-1 for 19 points, five back of the Scotians.  In second place between the Scotians and Bulldogs are the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles with a record of 11-7-0 for 22 points.

Lane Lochead continued his outstanding play for the Scotians notching a pair of assists giving him 16 in his past seven games.  Lochead has recorded a point in every single game the Scotians have played this season except for their season opener in Antigonish.   The Bulldogs outshot the Scotians 36-34 with Eli James stopping 34 of 36 shots in the Scotians net and Ethan Chisholm 31 of 34 shots for the Bulldogs.

Colts   4       Brookfield    2

The Brookfield Elks continue to give it everything they have and they have been so close to more wins this season than anyone can imagine.  The latest example came in Shearwater Friday evening when the hometown Colts doubled up the Elks 4-2 dropping the Elks to 3-15-1 on the season but also providing the Colts with their tenth consecutive win and improving to 16-3-0.

The Colts now lead the 2nd place South Shore Lumberjacks by 6 points in the race for first place in the Fred Fox Division, keeping in mind the first place finisher gets a bye in the first round if the playoffs when they begin in late February.  The Lumberjacks do hold four games in hand on the Colts.

The teams were tied 1-1 after the opening period as Camden MacKenzie of the Colts and Cale McClellan of the Elks traded goals 1:13 apart mid-way through the first.  McKenzie also added an assist later on a Colts goal.  Cooper Puma scored the first of his two goals to give his team a 2-1 lead after forty minutes.

David McElheran tied the game at 2-2 as the third period approached the half-way mark but Cooper Puma with his second off the game scored the game winner with 8:29 to play on the power-play.  Cody Garcin who also recorded a pair of assists put one into an empty net with 30 seconds left in regulation to seal the Colts win.  Liam Andrews assisted on three goals giving him at least one point in every single Colts game dating back to Oct 3 against East Hants.  The Colts outshot the Elks 48-33.  In the other game Friday evening:

Windsor Oxen   4       East Hants   3

For the second time in two weeks, the Oxen eked out a one goal win over the Penguins while handing East Hants their fifth consecutive loss 4-3 in Windsor as the Oxen played in support of the Kings County special Olympic Athletes.  The Penguins are now 11-6-1 for 23 points, nine back of the first place Colts and three back of the South Shore Lumberjacks as the Pens travel to Bridgewater Saturday evening.

Friday’s game began with a number if solid body-checks as both teams seemed prepared to lay it all out for a victory.  Aiden MacLeod did some terrific fore-checking for the Oxen in the early stages and then Nick Morin missed an excellent scoring chance before hauled down by the Oxen’s Laughlin Levy.

The Oxen came right back as a Micah Tucker pass over to Dylan Manning forced a great save to be made.  Manning without a doubt was the game’s first star with his relentless play all evening to go along with his two goals.  Matthew Shields and Lauchlin Levy then rushed the Pens net but were stopped cold.  The scoring chances did not stop as Aiden Nicolson made a great pass to Chris Caissie only to see Leafs goals Graydon Mole come up with a stupendous save.  Alex Field then missed in very close for the Pens.  The first goal of the game came after Dylan Manning broke down the right side and took a shot that seemingly eluded the East Hants net minder on Manning’s flip shot.  Finley Diab then tied it for the Penguins and not especially a hard shot but enough to get past Mole after Diab let it go from the top of the left face-off circle.  The Pens missed going up 2-1 when Alex Field made a great pass to Noah Maccallum only to be stopped cold.  Manning was denied again when he got a loose puck off the Pens defense and went in from the right side and let a solid shot go only to be denied.   The Leafs then took a tripping penalty with 52 seconds to play in the first and with only seven seconds showing on the clock, Chris Caisse took a pass from Jason Hanson on a 2 on 1 and took a shot to beat Mole that left no doubt.  East Hants outshot the Oxen 14-10 in the opening frame.

In the second, Manning who was all over the ice Friday evening missed in close early in the second.  The Oxen then tied it as Matthew Shields went in alone and picked up a loose puck on his original shot to deposit it into the net and tie the game at 2-2.  Kayden Kuryluk then made it 3-2 Oxen on a wrist shot from the point to the high right-hand corner of the Pens net.  Matthew Shields had an incredible save made on him late in the second period before the Leafs took an interference penalty with 33 seconds left to play in the second.  The Oxen dominated play in the second as they outshot East Hants 14-7.

Only 17 seconds into the third period and the Leafs still short-handed, Manning scored his second goal of the night as he skated around the East Hants net and rammed the puck home to put the Oxen up 4-3 and which proved to be the game winning goal.  East Hants pulled their goalie with 51 seconds left but could not come up with the tying goal.  The Oxen dominated play again in the third outshooting East Hants 14-4 and 38-25 on the game.
