East Hants-Jr. Miners...1 win away from advancing

The East Hants Penguins and Jr. Miners are now only one win away from advancing to the next round of the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Playoffs following respective wins Tuesday night.

After Mother Nature wiped out three Monday night playoff games due to wind and snow, the Penguins took the ice in Brookfield and the Jr. Miners travelled to Port Hawkesbury.  Following is a recap.

Jr. Miners   4       Port Hawkesbury   2

The game was exceptionally close through 40 minutes or two periods until the Jr. Miners exploded for three third period goals in the final eight minutes to double up the Strait.  Brady Doucette scored a pair of goals in the third for the winners including a power play goal with 0.54 seconds remaining.  The power play originated after Carlin Samson of the Pirates who scored the game’s first goal took a costly two minute interference penalty with under two minutes to play in regulation.  Landon Clark and Tyler Seymour scored the other goals for the winners who now lead the Best-of-Five Preliminary Round 2-1.  Cohan Hickey scored the other Strait goal when he tied the game with 5:42 to play in regulation.  Brady Matheson helped out with a pair of assists for the Jr. Miners while Lucas Fraser was solid in the net for the winners turning away 37 of 39 Port Hawkesbury shots.  The Jr. Miners had 31 at the other end.  Game 4 in the series will be played in Membertou Friday night.

East Hants   6       Brookfield   0

After being surprised by the Elks in Game 2, the Penguins roared back for the shut-out win in Brookfield.  The Penguins took period leads of 1-0 and 4-0 and never looked back.  Colby Brown recorded the shut-out stopping all 24 shots he faced in the East Hants net.  Nik Xidos scored a pair of goals for the winners with single markers going to Logan Durno, Noah Maccallum, Hayden Tamm and Jayson Hanson who also recorded a pair of assists.  East Hants took 38 shots on the Elks net.  Game 4 in this series goes back to Lantz Friday night with the Elks facing elimination.

Notes:  After 3 games in three nights, Mother Nature threw a weather bomb at the Sackville-Windsor series.  Game 4 in this series with the Oxen ahead 2-1 will be played Friday night in Sackville with a 5th game if necessary going Saturday night in Windsor.
