Pens squeeze by Colts -- Oxen burn Blazers

It was a see-saw battle from the very beginning before the East Hants Penguins were able to finally dispose of the Capstone Colts Friday evening.  East Hants took a 3-2 lead after one period before the Colts scored a pair in the second to take a 4-3 lead after forty minutes.  East Hants refused to lay down and came up with two third period goals to defeat the Colts 5-4.  Nick Xidos and Chris Caissie scored 3:34 apart early in the first period to put the Pens ahead 2-0. Jack Dulong then came back with one for the Colts before Caissie of the Pens made the score 3-1 for the visitors.  Camden MacKenzie finished the 1st period scoring for the Colts.  All five goals were scored in the opening ten minutes of the game.

 
The Colts Camden McKenzie scored his second of the game to give the Colts a 3-3 tie before Jacob Troini-Wllis put the Colts in front 4-3 entering the third.  Special teams fell apart for the Colts in the third as the Penguins scored twice, once on the power-play from Aiden Nicholson and the second was a short-handed marker from Thomas Panopalis which was enough to squeeze by the Colts in the hard fought game by a score of 5-4.  The Colts outshot the Pens 28-26 and played with an empty net for the final 1:42 of the game.  Chris Caissie finished with a three point game for the Pens on a pair of goals and one assist while Nick Xidos scored once and added 2 assists.  The Pens moved into a first place tie with the South Shore Lumberjacks improving to 4-1-0 on the season of eight points while the Colts dropped to .500 at 2-2-0.

The Oxen won their second consecutive game at home to begin the new season while they dropped the Blazers to 1-4-0 as they trounced Sackville 7-3.  Adam Maillet gave the Blazers a 1-0 lead before the Oxen came back and scored three in a row to take a 3-1 first period lead.  The same exact thing happened in the second after Will Meek scored a short-handed goal for the Blazers, Dylan Manning then scored short-handed for the Oxen for his first of two goals on the night to go along with an assist.  Paul Maloney made it 4-1 Oxen before Manning’s second goal put the Oxen up 6-2.  Only 33 seconds into the final period of regulation, Jasper Fitch made it 7-2 Oxen before Zachary Jenkins concluded the game’s scoring with the Blazers third goal of the evening to make the final 7-3.  Manning’s two goals came short-handed as well as on the power-play.  Other Oxen goal scorers were Matthew Shields with a pair and Cody Hebb who scored Windsor’s first goal of the game,  Windsor outshot the Blazers 51-42 including a 19-10 advantage in the third.  The Oxen will travel to the South Shore Saturday evening to take on the 4–0-0 Lumberjacks,

The Strait Pirates came out strong and took period leads of 4-1 and 7-1 as they handed the Jr. Miners their sixth consecutive loss.  Liam Trenholm, Ben MacDonald, Josh Gillis and Cohan Hickey scored the four goals for the Strait in the opening frame. Hudson Clarke scored the first of his two for the Jr. Miners.
 
In the second, the Strait poured three additional goals into the Jr. Miners net as Carlin Samson netted a pair and Cole Campbell on the power-play with Kolby LeForte scoring for the Jr, Miners.  The two goals in the third for the Jr, Miners were Clarke’s second goal of the game and another one by Brady Matheson.  Cadyn Power and Landon McInotsh both collected three assists for the Strait to improve to 3-3-0 on the season.  Port Hawkesbury outshot the Jr, Miners 38-36. 
 
In the third period of this contest tempers flared as six major penalties for fighting were assessed along with 6 game misconducts in the second period as well as three misconducts.  There were a total of 164 minutes assessed with 144 of them coming in the second period.
