Great game in Cape Breton.....Pens now 2-1-0 on season

The South Shore Lumberjacks and the Jr. Miners played a ferocious back and forth hockey game Saturday night as the Lumberjacks opened their two-game road trip to Cape Breton. The teams were tied 2-2 after one period and 4-4 after two periods before the Lumberjacks outscored the Jr. Miners 2-1 in the third to win 6-5 and improve to 2-0-0 on the season.  The Jr. Miners meanwhile fell to 0-3-0.

In the opening period Will Cook of the Lumberjacks tallied a power-play goal with 11:44 to play.  Just 23 seconds later Ryland Hanrahan also tallied a power-play goal to tie the game at 1-1. Garett MacIntosh made it 2-1 Jr. Miners before Evan Amirault made it 2-2 after one period as he tallied for the Lumberjacks,

South Shore came out in the second and grabbed a 3-2 lead on Marcus Tench’s goal before the second was even three minutes old but Landon Clark allowed the Lumberjacks to keep that lead for only 17 seconds as he scored to tie the game at 3-3 before Ayden Ball’s power-play goal put the Jr. Miners back on top 4-3.  Cohen Westlake then tied the game at 4-4 with just under six minutes remaining to send the teams into the third period tied at 4-4.

Will Cook scored his second of the game for the Lumberjacks to give South Shore a 4-3 lead but it lasted for only 2:03 before Cohen McNeil tied the game at 5-5 in the third period.  Preston Carver scored the game-winner and the final goal of the contest for the Lumberjacks with 7:34 left in regulation.  Tyson LeFrense recorded 3 assists for the Jr. Miners in a losing effort while the Lumberjacks outshot the Jr. Miners 46-31.

The Penguins improved to 2-1-0 just coming off an overtime win over the Windsor Oxen at home Friday evening.  Saturday night also at home, they were challenged by the Brookfield Elks.  The Penguins faced tough opposition in the Elks but eventually pulled out a 6-3 win.  Jayson Hanson and Thomas Panopalis made it 2-0 Penguins before the Elks David McElheran’s power-play goal brought the Elks back to within 1.  Noah Maccallum of the Pens and Ben Stewart of the Elks then traded goals to send the Pens to the dressing room with a 3-2 lead.

In the second period Braedy Kirton gave the home team a 4-2 lead after forty minutes.  Only 34 seconds into the third period Alex Field put the Pens up by 3 before Jack Piper of the Elks scored for the Elks to bring them back to within two goals.  Thomas Panapolis scored his second of the game for the final goal of the game and a 6-3 Pens win.  East Hants is now 2-1-0 while the Elks are 1-1-0.  Cole Echlin stopped 37 of 43 shots for the Elks while Fin Boudreau was challenged 24 times for the Pens stopping 21.
