Colts open up 6 point lead in Fox.....Jr. Eagles tie Pictou for first place in Rowe

The Capstone Colts have put themselves in a great position entering the second half of the 25-26 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League's Regular Season.  They recorded their 18th win in 21 games to date this season and have jumped six points ahead of the South Shore Lumberjacks in the chase for first place in the Fred Fox Division.

The Colts needed help from their top guns in the third period Saturday afternoon in Brookfield to nip the Elks 3-2 as Liam Andrews recorded his league leading 20th goal of the season and Cody Garcin scored his 19th of the season leaving both players at 1 and 2 in the league goal scoring race. Chris Caissie of East Hants is third with 17 goals.

The Colts other goal came from Nolan Stevens who put his team up 1-0 in the first period before Cale McClellan scored a pair in the first and second periods.  McClellan’s second goal gave the Elks a 2-1 lead entering the third.  The goals were is 12th and 13th markers of the season. The Elks fell to 3-16-1 but in seven of those games, they have lost by either one or two goals.

Zachary McInnes turned away 35 of 37 shots to win his seventh game of the year in nets for the Colts. McInnes has a 2.54 GAA and a .925 save percentage.  Logan Wallace stopped 43 of 46 shots in the Elks net.

Both teams now take a well deserved holiday break with the Colts not scheduled for action until Friday, Jan 9th at home against the Windsor Oxen.  The Elks meantime will be in East Hants Friday, Jan 9th and host the Eskasoni Jr. Eagles Saturday Jan 10th at 4:00 p.m.  Elsewhere Saturday:

Eskasoni   6     Jr. Minors   3

The Jr. Eagles assured themselves of one thing Saturday in their 6-3 doubling of the Jr. Miners and that they are now tied with the Pictou County Scotians for first place in the Sid Rowe Division.
They will have a chance to take a two point lead in the divisional race with a win Monday night over the Jr. Miners as the two teams play the final league game prior to the Christmas break.

In Saturday’s game, Noah MacKinnon of the Jr. Eagles and Brady Doucette both scored in the first period to leave the game knotted at 1 after twenty minutes.  Eskasoni outscored the Jr. Miners 2-1 in the second period to take a 3-2 lead on goals from Mitchell Gould and Marcellus Francis.  Kegan Corbett replied for the Jr. Miners who were coming off a 9-6 defeat in Windsor at the hands of the Oxen the previous night.

Jesse Cathcart put Eskasoni up 4-2 in the third before Landon Clark’s 16th goal of the season pulled the Jr. Miners to within 4-3. However that was all the scoring the Jr. Miners could do as the Jr. Eagles came back with goals from Zander Billard and Marcellus Francis put one into an empty net with 1:22 to play to seal the 6-3 win.

This game was a rough and tumble affair as 71 minutes in penalties were doled out in the first period by officials before the game settled down.  Eskasoni outshot the Jr. Miners 47-28.

Following Monday’s game with the Jr. Miners, Eskasoni will be idle until Saturday Jan 3rd when they travel to Bridgewater with a 3:00 p.m. match-up against the South Shore Lumberjacks.  They will then travel to Brookfield for a 4:00 p.m. start Jan 10th before returning home to play the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates Sunday Jan 11th at 7:30 p.m.

As for the Jr. Miners following Monday night, they will host the Pictou County Scotians Saturday, Jan 10th and then play two games the weekend of Jan 16th and 18th when they travel to Port Hawkesbury on the 16th for a 7:30 start and Jan 18th when they go to Trenton to meet the Pictou County Scotians again, this time in a 6:00 p.m. start.
