2025 Don Johnson Memorial Cup opens

The Capstone Colts and the Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs both won their opening games in the 2025 Don Johnson Memorial Cup in Cocagne, New Brunswick Wednesday.

The Colts who won the Nova Scotia Junior Championship on Easter Eve, played Kensington P.E.I. in their opening game Wednesday and after falling behind 2-1 after one period, stormed back with four consecutive goals to defeat the Island Vipers 5-2.  Cooper Puma who also added a pair of assists scored the lone Colts goal in the first on the power-play.  In the second, Liam Higgins and Cody Garcin put the Colts ahead 3-2 entering the third.  Finn Merritt  and Higgins with his second of the game finished the game’s scoring for the Colts in the third period.

The Colts outshot the Island 36-32 and will swing back into action Thursday at 12:00 noon against the Bulldogs in their round-robin game of the tournament before squaring off against Cap Pele Thursday night.

Antigonish   4      Cape Pele, N.B.   2

The Bulldogs Cameron Bell scored in the first period and Antigonish never looked back. Daniel Chaisson and Will Normandeau put the Bulldogs up 3-0 before Cape Pele could ever get on the scoreboard.  Campbell Barrett made it 4-1 Antigonish before Cap Pele scored one more goal before the game ended.  Cap Pele did outshoot the Bulldogs 26-22.

There are two teams from Nova Scotia participating in what is now a Maritime Championship this year as Newfoundland decided not to participate.  Mt. Pearl, Newfoundland hosted last season’s Atlantic Championship.

Antigonish despite losing this year’s Nova Scotia Junior Championship in six games to the Colts for the first time in four years, will still have a chance at their fourth consecutive Junior Championship for the Maritimes.
