Pens and Jr. Eagles record OT wins

With only one week remaining in the NSJHL Regular season, the games are becoming even closer and nail-biting than any fan could ever anticipate.  Take for example the Eskasoni-Pictou Friday night game in Trenton:

Eskasoni   4      Pictou    3

The 1st place Jr. Eagles rebounded from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the County Scotians 4-3 in sudden-death overtime.  It took only 43 seconds into the overtime period for Kendrick Marshall to score the game winner.  The Jr. Eagles collected their 19th win of the season against 8 losses to maintain their three point lead over the 2nd place Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs who after their win Friday are at 17-8-1 compared to the Jr. Eagles 19-8-0 record.

Camden Burgess and Kyle Nearing put Pictou up 2-0 with goals four minutes apart in the first period before Jesse Cathcart responded for Eskasoni with 21 seconds to play in the opening frame.

Chris Jordan then put Pictou back up by a pair with only 2:10 left in the second before Cathcart with his second of the game scored 41 seconds later to leave Pictou up by one going to the third.  Mitchell Gould’s goal for the Jr. Eagles was the only one scored in the third forcing the overtime.  The Scotians who fell to 13-10-1 and battled the Eagles for first for a good portion of the season are now locked into third place for the season.  Pictou outshot Eskasoni 37-29.

East Hants   4      Colts   3

The Penguins secured their 18th win of the season with a hard fought 4-3 win over the Fox Division leading Colts.  With the teams tied 2-2 entering the third period, Thomas Panopalis connected for a pair of goals early in the third including one on the power-play to give East Hants the win.  Liam Andrews 24th goal of the season on the power-play pulled the Colts to within a single goal but they could not come up with the equalizer.  Andrews goal put him one behind teammate Cody Garcin for the League Lead in goals.

The teams played a scoreless second period while Noah Comeau and Logan Durno replied for the Penguins in the first period and Jack Dulong and Jacob Trioni-Willis tallied for the Colts who outshot East Hants 36-31.  The Colts are now 21-5-2 for 44 points and two games remaining in their regular season schedule.

South Shore   4       Windsor   1

Jack Piper scored a pair of goals for the Lumberjacks pacing them to a victory in Windsor.  After Piper’s goal in the first period, Cam Walsh tied it for the Oxen in the second before Piper’s second goal of the game and another by Brennan Coleman put the Lumberjacks up by a pair entering the third.  Jackson Spraggon’s goal was the only one in the third.  The game was a chippy affair with 85 minutes in penalties handed out including a five minute major and a game misconduct to the Lumberjacks Brandon Rideout for kneeing while Kayden Kuryluk received a double minor for roughing after the whistle as well as a misconduct and game misconduct.  South Shore outshot Windsor 39-34.

Antigonish   6    Port Hawkesbury   3

The Bulldogs doubled up the Strait as Owen Flemming and Owen Forsythe gave the Jr. Bulldogs a 2-0 lead after one.  Antigonish went ahead 3-0 in the second on a goal from Owen Juurlink, his first of two on the evening.  The Strait outshot 51-28 replied with a pair from Craig Saulnier and James Daalder before Kevin Walker put Antigonish up 4-2 entering the third period.  Cadyn Power’s power-play goal brought the Strait back to within 4-3 in the third before Juurlink’s second goal into an empty net and Daniel Chaisson’s marker made the final 6-3.  There were only two minor penalties handed out during the game.
