Two over-time games and Oxen win again

The Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League finished off an outstanding weekend of “shinny” with a pair of sudden-death overtime games and another win by the Windsor Oxen.  First off in Bridgewater:

South Shore   6     Capstone   5 - (Sudden-Death Overtime)

Brennan Coleman had a phenomenal night at home as he scored twice and added two assists to pace the Lumberjacks to a 6-5 sudden-death overtime win over the Colts.  Coleman’s second goal came in sudden-death after 1:43 had been played.  The four points now give him 16 goals and 14 assists for 30 points on the season.  Leo MacLean picked up 3 assists for the winners to give him 19 on the season to go along with 9 goals.  The Lumberjacks who still have four games in hand on the Colts took a 3-2 first period lead on goals from Brandon Rideout, Cohen Westlake and Owen MacDermid.  Camden McKenzie opened the game’s scoring before the opening period was 45 seconds old.  The Colts other goal came from Cody Garcin who netted his league-leading 25th of the season.  The lone goal of the second came off the stick of Coleman and gave the Lumberjacks a 4-2 lead after two periods.  The Colts came out aggressively in the third outscoring the Lumberjacks 3-1 on a pair goals from Connor Malana and another from Liam Andrews.  Marcus Tench had the sole Lumberjacks goal in the final period of regulation.

Brandt Whitelaw had another 3 assist night for the Colts giving him six for the weekend and 19 on the season.  Th Lumberjacks were outshot 37-35 by the Colts who are now 21-4-1 for 43 points while the Lumberjacks are 18-4-0 for 36 points.  The key issue for the Lumberjacks is they will have to take advantage of the games in hand they have on the Colts.  The two teams play again Wednesday night in Shearwater at 7:30 in a make-up game.

Antigonish   3      East Hants   2    (Sudden-Death Overtime)

The Penguins Jayson Hanson took a costly holding penalty 37 seconds into sudden-death in Antigonish Saturday night and with 1:05 having elapsed in the penalty, Owen Flemming scored on the power-play to give the Bulldogs their third consecutive win of the week and sixth in a row, 3-2.  The Jr. Bulldogs improved to 14-8-1 and now trail first place Eskasoni by 3 points. Earlier this season, Antigonish Head Coach Ryan Clayo said different people asked him if this is a re-building year for the three-time defending Atlantic and Maritime Junior Champions after their 6-3-1 start to the 25-26 Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Season.  His answer, “Not at all.”

They are living up to the words of Clayo with five games left in the regular season portion of their schedule.

Special teams played an integral role in Saturday’s win as besides Lemming’s power-play goal, the Jr. Bulldogs added a short-handed marker by Will Normandeau in the third and another power-play marker from Brody MacPherson in the second period.  The Pens opened up a 2-0 lead before the Antigonish rally when Georgetown, Ontario native Chris Caisssie scored his 20th of the season in the first to go along with his 22 assists while Nik Xidos short-handed marker put East Hants up 2-0 in the second.  Daniel Chaisson collected a pair of assists for the Bulldogs.  Ethan Chisholm turned away 36 of 38 shots for the Bulldogs while Colby Brown turned away 41 of 44 shots in the Pens net.  It marked the second straight loss for the Pens over the weekend meaning they are now 14-8-2 and only 3 points ahead of the fourth place Windsor Oxen who defeated the Elks in Brookfield Saturday afternoon.

Windsor   6     Brookfield   2

Wilson Davison scored his 12th and 13th goals of the season and Micah Tucker also added a pair as the Oxen took a 4-1 lead after the opening period.  Matthew Shields who opened the game’s scoring and Reese Smith added the other Oxen goals who improved to 12-10-3 for 27 points.  Owen Cleary and Brady Croft connected for the Elks who fell to 3-20-1 for 7 points.  Ryan LeBlanc turned away 41 of 43 shots for the Oxen who were actually outshot by the Elks 43-40.  Jacob Gerhardt and Dylan Manning also collected a pair of assists for the winners.
