Incredible game in Windsor and Colts 14 game winning streak snapped

The Capstone Colts had their 14 game winning streak snapped in Lantz Friday night while the Windsor Oxen scored twice in the last 44 seconds of regulation to send their game into overtime against the Sackville Blazers.  The following is a rundown of action from Friday night in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.

East Hants   6       Capstone Colts   4

The Penguins took period leads of 3-1 and 4-2 and never looked back as they snapped the Colts 14 game winning streak.  Connor Stewart and Chris Caissie with a power-pay goal put the Pens up 2-0 before Jack Dulong’s power-play goal brought the Colts back to within one with 2:12 to play in the opening period.  Scoring was not complete as Jayson Hanson tallied with 32 seconds left in the first to give East Hants a 3-1 lead.

In the second, Jacob Trioni-Willis brought the Colts back to within a goal before Nik Xidos gave the Pens their 4-2 lead after forty minutes.  In the final period, Logan Durno made it 5-2 Pens before  Connor MacPhail and Cody Garci with his league-leading 23rd goal of the season brough the Colts back to within 5-4 before Aiden Nicholson scored for the Pens to make the final 6-4.  Nicholson also added a pair of assists on the evening.  The Colts outshot East Hants 44-36 and fell to 20-4-0 while the Penguins improved to 14-7-1 for 29 points.

Windsor Oxen   6     Sackville Blazers   5   (Shoot-out)

In one of the most dramatic junior games to be played in Windsor in quite some time, the Oxen improved to 10-10-2 by scoring twice in the game’s final 44 seconds of regulation to tie the game with the Blazers at 5-5.  To top this, the Oxen missed a penalty shot with 22 seconds left in regulation that would have given them the win before extra time was required.  In overtime they also had a goal disallowed seemingly from goaltender interference but there was no proper announcement by the rink announcer, so it left everyone wondering?

The win for the Oxen marked their third victory in four games over the Blazers this season and they have outscored Sackville 21-17.  The two clubs have one game left in their regular season series on Monday, February 9 in Sackville at 7:30 p.m.

In Friday’s game, Xavier Rivard scored his 13th of the season on a nice pass from Dylan Probert and Rivard delivered a crisp shot past Oxen net minder Graydon Mole.  With only 1:25 to play in the opening period, Lauchlin Levy made a superb pass to Cody Hebb who let a great shot go to tie the game at 1-1.  The teams then traded goals again in the second period as Adam Maillet picked up a third rebound on a pass from Probert and Sackville led 2-1 less than three minutes into the middle period.  Maillet also collected a pair of assists for the Blazers.  The Oxen’s Aidan MacLeod scored with the Blazers short-handed on a bounce in front of the Sackville net with just 3:11 to play in the middle period. The Oxen were also stymied as Jacob Gerhardt missed a golden opportunity when he went in alone and missed the net and Reese Smith could not connect on a nice pad save.

The third period began with Connor Foston putting the Blazers up 3-2 before Matthew Shields with his 12th goal of the season put one into the high right hand corner of the Sackville net from the right face-off circle tied the game again at 3-3.  The Blazers then went ahead 4-3 on  a goal from Will Meek before Nik Mokriakov on the power-play drilled a point shot to make it 5-3 Sackville.  The game’s 6th, 7th and 8th goals were scored in a span of 1:15.
With only 44 seconds left in regulation William Hartnell scored for the Oxen on a scramble in front of the net and then Micha Tucker tied the game at 5-5 with under 30 seconds remaining on a great pass from Brady MacKenzie.
With no scoring in the overtime, the clubs went to a shoot-out and the Oxen’s Aidan MacLeod fanned after trying a back-hand shot.  The Blazers Will Meek was then stopped cold on a pad save by Graydon Mole.  Matthew Shields then scored on the Oxen’s second attempt as he beat the Sackville net minder clean before Dylan Probert shot wide on the Blazers second attempt and the Oxen breathed a huge sigh of relief to win the game 6-5.  The Oxen outshot Sackville 54-48.  The Blazers outshot the Oxen 15-9 and 16-14 in the opening two periods before the  Oxen rebounded to outshoot the Blazers 21-15 in the third and 10-2 in the sudden-death overtime.

Port Hawkesbury   7     Jr. Miners   6
