Lumberjacks advance with late third period goal...to eliminate Pens in 7
After being blanked 2-0 and 1-0 and allowing the East Hants Penguins to tie the Fred Fox Divisional Final at 3-3, The South Shore Lumberjacks scored with under three minutes to play in regulation Sunday afternoon in Bridgewater to defeat the Penguins 4-3 and advance to play the Capstone Colts in the Division Final with Game 1 in Shearwater Wednesday night.

After the Penguins rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game at 3-3 with 4:25 left in regulation, Evan Amirault scored the game winner for the Lumberjacks with only 2:56 left in regulation.  Owen MacDermid had a great afternoon for the South Shore scoring once and picking up three assists.

In the early going, Logan Durno had the Penguins best chance in the opening minutes as he went in on Kegan Greencorn’s right side only to see Greencorn make a solid save.  Chace Munden who played an exceptional game for the Penguins took a shot from the tip of the left-off face-off circle to put the Penguins up 1-0 with only 2:29 having elapsed after the opening face-off.

The Lumberjacks rallied with a pair of goals before the first period ended as they were all over the Penguins net before Jackson Spraggon was in the right spot at the right time and tipped a shot past Colby Brown’s low right side.

The Lumberjacks had two great opportunities before Will Cook took a pass from behind the net from Kyle MacIntyre with 10:04 left in the first period to put the South Shore up 2-1.  The Lumberjacks had only five seconds remaining on their power-play when Cook scored.

Brown then made a great save on Cohen Westlake directly in front of the net as the Penguins were killing off their second penalty of the opening frame.

When the penalty concluded, the Penguins seemed to get some added life as they missed on a 2 on 1 with Greencorn standing tall wit 59 seconds to play in the first.  Noah Comeau then set up Bryce Stewart close in, in the dying seconds of the first to keep the score at 2-1 Lumberjacks after 1 period.  The South Shore outshot East Hants 15-10.

Both teams battled exceptionally hard in the opening half of the second period before MacDermid made it 3-1 Lumberjacks on a third attempt on Brown as he nailed it home.  Munden then had another scoring opportunity for the Penguins but Greencorn caught the puck high around his neck for the save.  Westlake then had two fantastic opportunities for the Lumberjacks before Munden missed on a great 2 on 1 with Finley Diab.  The second period demonstrated some exceptional goaltending by both sides as Kyle MacIntyre missed when Brown came up with a terriffic save close in.  Theo Stapleton missed moving the Pens to within a goal on a deadly giveaway by the Lumberjacks but then East Hants took a ridiculous cross-checking penalty with only 17 seconds remaining in the middle frame to put the Lumberjacks on the power-play for the opening 1:43 of the third period.  The South Shore outshot the Penguins 12-11 in the second for a two period advantage of 27-21.

The third period was a different game for the Penguins as they killed off their penalty and came at the Lumberjacks in a ferocious  manner.  Munden hit a goal post on a pass from behind the net and then Chris Caissie missed on a 2 on 1as he was sent in on a breakaway.  The Penguins really began to turn the pressure on with 12 minutes to play.  Pens defenseman Noah Comeau rang a shot off the cross-bar as the Penguins demonstrated strong puck control resulting in Logan Durno making it a 3-2 game with a shot from the left face-off circle.  The Lumberjacks took a penalty with 6:09 to play in regulation.  Durno went in again and missed only to see the puck come out to Jacob Sanford who saw his shot just dribble over the goal line to tie the game at 3-3 with 4:25 to play.

The Lumberjacks despite being outshot by a wide-margin of 19-6 in the third rallied when they had to and Amirault standing directly to the left of Brown banged it in which proved to be both the game-winner and series winner.  To make matters worse for the Penguins, Theo Stapleton was assessed a minor for hauling down a Lumberjack as he was headed for a wide-open Penguins net.   The Penguins playing 5 on 5 pulled Brown for the final 27 seconds and had one good chance but could not come up with the equalizer.  The Penguins outshot the Lumberjacks 40-33 for the game.

This marked the third consecutive season in which the Lumberjacks and Penguins played a sensational Fox semi-final with the unfortunate part for the Penguins being that they have lost all three series.

The Lumberjacks will now try and conquer the Capstone Colts in order to advance to the Provincial Junior Championship series.  The Lumberjacks lost in seven games to the Colts last season as the Colts went on to win the Provincial Championship.  In 23-24, the Lumberjacks took the Colts out in four straight before losing the Provincial Championship in six games to the Bulldogs.
