Bulldogs and Colts up 2-0, Pens tie their series at 1-1

One series is now tied at 1-1 while three other teams have 2-0 lead in NSJHL Divisional Semi-Finals:  Here is a recap of Friday’s games:

Antigonish   4     Port Hawkesbury   0

The Strait Pirates have now been shut-out in their opening two games with the Jr. Bulldogs, being outscored 6-0 over 120 minutes.  The Jr. Bulldogs trying to win their third provincial championship in four years went up 1-0 in the second period on a power-play goal from Kevin Walker, only four seconds prior to the Pirates Angus Berry’s interference being expired.

In the third period, the Jr. Bulldogs continued to play strong defense while scoring three times on goals from Luc Legere, less than a minute into the final period of regulation,  Tully Grant and Brody MacPherson.  Legere also added an assist for Antigonish who will play Game 3 in the Strait tonight at 7:30 p.m. before going back to Antigonish for Game 4 Wednesday night.  Ethan Chisholm recorded his second shut-out of the series stopping all 25 shots he faced while Liam McGilip also played strong for the Strait Pirates stopping 35 of 39 shots.

Colts   6     Windsor   5

The Capstone Colts were outshot for a second consecutive game by the spirited Windsor Oxen but the Colts have still managed to take a 2-0 series lead following their 6-5 win in Shearwater Friday night over the Oxen.  Dylan Manning put the Oxen up 1-0 in the opening period before Matthew Walker tallied for the Colts 25 seconds later to leave the teams tied 1-1 after the opening period.

In the second, there was a litany of goals, 6 in total with four by the Colts giving them a 5-3 lead after forty minutes.  In a span of 5:22, the teams connected for 5 of the six goals with Jacob Train-Willis scoring the only full strength goal. Two power-play markers were registered by the Colts Luke McPhee, while Cam Walsh and Wilson Davison registered power-play markers for the Oxen.  Cooper Puma’s short-handed effort was the other goal in the second period.

In the third period, Cooper Puma who finished with two goals and an assist scored one minute into the third to give the Colts a 6-3 advantage before Dylan Manning’s short-handed effort, his second goal of the night and Wilson Davison also scored his second of the night with one second remaining to make the final 6-5 Colts.  The teams return to the John Paris Jr. Rink in Windsor for Game 3 Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.  Liam Andrews and Cody Garcin both contributed three assists for the winning Colts.  The Oxen also saw Kayden Kuryluk assessed a match penalty in the third period and Jacob Gerhardt was given a double-minor for deliberate attempt to injure in the second.  Kuryluk will likely be missing for at least tonight’s game in Windsor while League officials will no doubt be meeting Saturday over Gerhardt’s penalty.  Windsor outshot the Colts 37-34 but have been outscored 12-8 in the two playoff games to date.

East Hants   6        South Shore   1

The Penguins returning to their home ice played an aggressive first period outshooting the Lumberjacks 17-14 and taking a 2-0 lead after twenty minutes.  The Pens first goal came after sloppy defensive play by the Lumberjacks in front of their own net allowing Logan Durno to pick up a loose puck and bury it home for a 1-0 lead.  The Penguins went on the power-play less than three minutes into the game but Jayson Hanson was foiled on a rebound after Kegan Greecorn made an initial save.  Chris Caissie also missed in close for the Pens.  The South Shore then took a delay of game penalty and the Penguins were aggressive all around the Lumberjacks net and could not connect on three opportunities before Finley Diab on a weird kind if goal took a shot from the icing line and it somehow deflected off the back of Greencorn dropping into the net for a 2-0 Pens lead.

The Lumberjacks on the power-play were buzzing all over the East Hants net and Owen MacDermid made a superb pass which the Lumberjacks failed to connect on.  The Pens despite outshooting the Lumberjacks 24-17 in the second, gave up the puck more times than they should have but received exceptional goaltending from Colby Brown to keep the Pens in the forefront. The Lumberjacks missed another golden opportunity as Will Cook  was robbed in front of the Pens net by Greencorn, unfortunately Greencorn could not hang onto the rebound and Braedy Kirton put East Hants up 3-0.  Owen MacDermid shortly after had another great scoring chance for the Lumberjacks before his shot rang off the crossbar.  Nik Xidos made it 4-0 East Hants on a hard shot which he took on the power-play, 32 seconds after the Lumberjacks went to the penalty box.  Keegan Greencorn who 9.5 times out of 10 plays superbly for the Lumberjacks, was pulled after the Pens fourth goal and replaced by Jack Lowe.  Despite some flaws in the second, East Hants played the final half of the second in relatively strong fashion, skating aggressively and going up 5-0 on another power-play goal, this one from Aiden Nicholson.  East Hants outshot the Lumberjacks 24-17 in the second for a two period total of 41-31 over the South Shore.  Before the second concluded, the Pens rifled a shot of a goal post and then Nate Grafstein on the power-pay for South Shore missed on a break-away.  With 1:16 to play in the second, Grafstein finally put the Lumberjacks on the scoreboard to make it 5-1 East Hants.  In the closing minutes of the second, Jack Piper and Brennan Coleman missed an excellent opportunity after the Pens took a penalty with 51 seconds to play in the middle frame.

The opening ten minutes of the third saw the South Shore outshoot East Hants 7-1 but they could still not score on Brown.  The last ten minutes of the third period slowed the game to a crawl as 98 of the game’s 120 penalty minutes were assessed which included 7 misconducts.  Jayson Hanson scored the game’s final goal when he connected for East Hants on the power-pay with 8:18 left in the game.  The South Shore did outshoot the Pens 14-13 in the third but for the game trailed in shots to the Penguins by a count of 54-45.
