Stunning game in Sackville and Elks take Jacks to OT

The Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League with three games played on the Holiday Monday, is now down to only two regular season games remaining in their 25-26 schedule and all playoff positioning decided except for first place in the Sid Rowe Division.  Here is a recap of Monday’s play:

Sackville   7       East Hants   5

In Sackville Monday night, somewhat of a strange affair as the fifth place host Blazers coming off two sunning losses to Brookfield over the weekend played the East Hants Penguins.  East Hants led 2-1 after two periods before an earthquake hit the Penguins in the final 2:41 of regulation.  Until this point the Penguins held a 5-3 lead but stranger things can happen at anytime in a game and they sure did in this one as the Blazers struck for four goals in the final 2:41 of regulation to defeat the Pens 7-5.

Brody Fitzpatrick and Tyler Curnew scored goals 30 seconds apart for the Blazers to tie the game at 5-5 with 2:14 left in regulation.  Then with 1:11 to play, Dawson LaPlante connected to put the Blazers up 6-5 before Brady Burke scored into an empty net to give the 10-17-3 Blazers a 7-5 win.  Other Sackville goal scorers were Aiden Tucker with a pair and Xavier Rivard.

For the 20-8-2 Penguins, Nick Morin, Noah Comeau, Chris Caissie, Aiden Nicholson and Brady Kirton scored.  For Caissie, it was his 25th goal of the season to go along with an assist, also his 25th on the season to give him 50 points.  The Penguins outshot the Blazers 49-45.

Both teams are now preparing for their opening round Best-of-Five Preliminary Round Playoff series as the Blazers prepare for their opening game in Windsor Friday night at 7:30 while the Penguins await the suddenly re-surging Brookfield Elks in Lantz on Friday at 7:30 as well.

South Shore   4        Brookfield    3   (Overtime)

I commented on the suddenly re-surging Elks after 4-3 overtime loss Monday afternoon in Bridgewater to the South Shore Lumberjacks, in a game the Elks outshot the Lumberjacks by a considerable margin of 45-24.

The Elks now 2-0-1 in their last three games allowed the Lumberjacks to take a 2-0 lead after the opening period on a pair of goals from Owen MacDermid.  Rylan Jollimore then brought the Elks back to within one in the second before MacDermid completed his hat-trick and allowed the Lumberjacks to take a 3-1 lead to their dressing room after two periods.  The three goals for MacDermid gives him 12 on the season, double his production when he played for the Valley Maple Leafs (now the Windsor Oxen) in 24-25.

It was the third when Bryson Currie did his damage for the Elks as he scored twice including the tying goal with 1:40 left in regulation to send the game to a five minute sudden-death.  The Elks nearly forced a shoot-out before Luke Crotty scored the game-winner for the 23-7-0 Lumberjacks with 1:27 left in sudden-death.  Keegan Greencorn turned away 42 of 45 shots in the Lumberjack nets while Brennan Coleman collected three assists on the four Lumberjack goals.  South Shore by finishing second has now earned a first-round bye in the opening round of the playoffs while as mentioned above the Elks prepare for a Best-of-Five Preliminary round with the East Hants Penguins.

Jr. Miners   6      Port Hawkesbury  1

The Strait Pirates who are having a terribly inconsistent season lost their 20th game of the year 6-1 to the 6-22-2 Jr. Miners in Membertou.  Landon Clark scored a pair for the Jr. Miners while also adding an assist.  For Clark it was his 21st and 22nd goals of the season.  Ayden Bell on the power-play, Garrett MacIntosh with a short-handed marker, Tyler Seymour and Ty Oliver added singles for the winners while the lone Strait Pirate goal was scored by Carson MacEachern at the start of the second period.

Manny Strong turned away 41 of 42 shots in the Jr. Miner pipes while Neil MacLean stopped 35 of 41 in the Strait nets.

The Jr. Miners are still unclear as to who they will be playing in their Best-of-Five Preliminary round as it could be either Eskasoni or Antigonish.  The Strait Pirates are now preparing for the Pictou County Scotians.
