Colts clinch 1st in Fox Division, Elks upset Sackville

The Capstone Colts have clinched first place in the Fred Fox Division of the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League’s regular season but it took them to the final game of the season in Windsor Friday evening.  In order for the South Shore Lumberjacks to even have a chance, they had to defeat the East Hants Penguins while the Colts had to lose to the Oxen.

In Windsor, this clearly did not happen as the Colts despite being outshot 46-44 by Windsor secured a 7-4 win.  Luke MacPhee on a 2 on 1 with Cooper Puma as well as Camden MacKenzie scored goals 37 seconds apart early in the opening frame before Puma and Liam Andrews added two more goals to put the Colts ahead 4-0.  Th Oxen certainly did not lay down and die as they roared back to score three in a row to trail only 4-3 before Cooper Puma scored his second of the night to go along with 3 assists to make the score 5-3 after twenty minutes.  The fifth goal by Puma coming on a hard wrist shot.  Liam Andrews besides his goal also delivered 5 assists  The three goal scorers for the Oxen in the opening frame were Brady MacKenzie on a hard wrist shot from the blue-line, Dylan Manning and Kayden Kuryluk on a great pass from behind the net and on the power-play.  The third and fourth goals for the Colts were both scored short-handed.

In the second, the Colts started the exact same way as they did in the first, scoring twice in a span of 12 seconds before the middle period was even two minutes old providing the Colts with a 7-3 lead.  Both of those goals were tallied by Connor MacPhee.  The lone goal of third was scored by Windsor’s Lachlan Levy who tipped a point shot from defensman Noah Befakadu.

Andrew’s huge night gave him 25 goals and 33 assists for 58 points, still short of the League’s top point getter Lane Lochead whose team had two regular season games left going into Friday night.  Despite being outscored 5-3 in the first period, the Oxen outshot the Colts 20-19 and again in the third 14-8.  The Colts had a 17-12 advantage in the middle period.

It is difficult to say whether these two clubs will play again this season as the Colts finished the regular season with a record of 23-5-2 for 48 points while the Oxen concluded at 13-14-3.  The only way they could play again now would be in a Fox Divisional Semi-Final or Division Final.  The Oxen realize they played a formidable opponent in five games this season and will have to do a few different things if they ever hope to change things around if the clubs meet again in the playoffs.  The Colts won the season series 5-0-0 while the Oxen went 0-4-1 with the Colts outscoring the Oxen 36-20.  Elsewhere Friday night:

East Hants   5      South Shore   2

With the Colts winning, the outcome of this game meant little to the Lumberjacks who required a Colts loss and a Lumberjacks win for the South Shore to still have a shot at first in the Fox.  Neither result transpired as the Penguins fell behind early 2-0 but rebounded with five consecutive goals for a 5-2 win.  Marcus Tench scored both South Shore goals in the first before Finn Morris and Jayson Hanson tied the game at 2-2 after the opening period.

In the second, Noah Comeau put the Penguins up 3-2 before East Hants conclude the game’s scoring with two goals in the third from Aiden Nicholson and Chris Caissie.  Jacob Sanford collected three assists for the Pens who outshot the Lumberjacks 36-34. Each team has one regular season game remaining with the South Shore at 22-7-0 and East Hants at 20-7-2.

Pictou   6     Port Hawkesbury    5

In the Strait, the County Scotians staked themselves to a 4-1 lead before hanging on for a 6-5 win over Port Hawkesbury.  Will Brown, Kyle Nearing and Chris Jorden put the Scotians up 3-0 before Luke MacEachern’s power-play goal for Port Hawwkesbury made it 3-1 after the first period.

In the second, John Kay Martin made it 4-1 Pictou before Landon MacIntosh scored his 14th and 15th goals of the season for the Strait to close the gap to 4-3. Henry Dougan put Pictou back up by a pair before the second period concluded.

In the third, Aimas Crossman scored Pictou’s sixth goal before Craig Saulnier scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season for the Strait Pirates to bring Port Hakwesbury within a goal.  They could not score the equalizer and Pictou escaped with a 6-5 win while outshooting the Strait Pirates 44-21.

Brookfield    5      Sackville   1

In Sackville, the Elks would have enjoyed a few of these wins earlier in the season but they were ready to rumble on the road scoring a 5-1 win over the Blazers.  The teams played a scoreless first period before Cole Schofield and Bryson Currie’s short-handed marker put the Elks up 2-0 after forty minutes.

In the third, Owen Cleary made it 3-0 Brookfield before Dylan Probert scored the Blazers lone goal of the game.  Owen Cleary with his second of the contest and Cale MacLellan finished off the game’s scoring to give the Elks their fourth win of the regular season.  Sackville outshot Brookfield 46-37 as Logan Wallace turned away 45 of the 46 shots he faced in the Elks net.  The two clubs meet again Saturday afternoon in Brookfield at 4:00 p.m.
